BREAKING: ARISE SIR DAVID BECKHAM

Fri Jun 06, 2025 6:00 pm

David Beckham is set to be awarded a knighthood in King Charles' Birthday Honours.
BBC Sport

The former England football captain, 50, was appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003.
But BBC Sport has been told he is now in line to receive further recognition for both his football career, and his contributions to British society, with the list of recipients to be published next week.

Beckham played 115 times for his country as well as for Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, Paris St-Germain and AC Milan, retiring in 2013.

Beckham was reportedly first nominated for a knighthood in 2011.
In 2017 several British newspapers printed details of leaked emails in which Beckham allegedly criticised the honours system and the honours committee.

A spokesperson for Beckham said at the time that the emails were "hacked", "doctored" and "private".

The former footballer married singer and fashion designer Victoria Beckham in 1999.

The couple share four children - Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper Seven.
Beckham played a key role in securing the London 2012 Olympics, and has been an ambassador for Unicef since 2005.
Unicef - which supports vulnerable children around the world - launched 'The David Beckham Unicef Fund' in 2015 to mark a decade's partnership between the two.

Beckham became an ambassador for The King's Foundation in 2024, supporting King Charles' education programme and efforts to ensure young people have a greater understanding of nature.
He is also part-owner of League Two side Salford City, as well as president and co-owner of Major League Soccer team Inter Miami in the United States.

He helped set-up the Inter Miami CF Foundation - a community driven not-for-profit enterprise that looks to empower underserved communities, using football as a catalyst.

"He is a great ambassador for football and the country," Beckham's former England team-mate Wayne Rooney told BBC Sport.

"[/]We all see the charity work that he has done for many years and I am sure he will continue to do that.
"Globally he is a massive icon for any charity to work alongside and he makes everyone proud by raising a lot of money over the years.

"You don't get to his level worldwide if you don't work hard. He was persistent and kept going to get the reward he deserved.[/i]"

A government spokesperson said: "We do not comment on speculation on honours."

Beckham's representatives declined to comment.

I watch some documentary on his family. It was a great watch and they came over right down to earth.

I agree with what others have said, he deserves it.

Over the last few years, he's given the impression of almost "chasing" the knighthood. That may be why they've waited this long.

But he should have got it years ago. Always comes across as down to earth.

If you listen to the likes of Roy Keane, who we know has high standards, he always speaks highly of Beckham.

He said that when though there was a major celebrity factor around Beckham, it didn't stop him being focused on playing well for his football team - can't say the same about others.

Good on him. Really pleased for Becks.

Comes across as a really decent bloke

I'm sure he's an overall decent enough bloke BUT he was pretty quick to take a few million quid from the Qatari's to promote their WC tournament, despite outrage over their mistreatment of migrant workers who suffered during the construction of their stadiums. Its not all sweetness and light with Sir Dave.

Its probably the right time.
The negative publicity over the Panama papers and alleged emails of him throwing his toys out of the pram over not getting one, are distant memories.
He's always come over as a decent bloke, so it's a well done from me.

And no one else gets a knighthood having done nothing dubious? Bet 99% of knighthoods are either not deserved or the person as done things some people didn't like?
I'm guessing because it's the kings birthday honours less be said ... but he does deserve one in grande scheme of things more so than others who will be announced and certainly the ones in new years honours

And therein lies the issue with the broken system of dishing out gongs to celebrities and other self-promoters. All Beckham has done is make himself millions off the back of his footballing ability and good looks - ok, he's done UNICEF work but so do countless celebrities.

The whole honours system either ought to be binned off or redirected to ordinary members of the public who have given extraordinary sacrifice / service to others over a lifetime e.g. war veterans, community volunteers. Currently, its just like a watered down facsimile of a Bafta film ceremony.

Eamon Holmes said his relative was defusing limpet mines in WW2 and he got a BEM for risking his life, Eamon himself got a higher award, OBE, for chatting shite on TV.
Once upon a time knighthoods were awarded for valour on the battle field, who’d follow Elton John or Cliff Richard into battle?

I certainly think it should be redefined! To many pals act get knighted and other undeserving people getting one... as for becks 20yrs of being unicef children's ambassador plus other things is a better reason to give him a gong above the cretins that new years honours dosh out.

This has been confirmed this evening.

Other sports stars given honours are Darts players Luke Littler and Luke Humphries - they both receive MBEs.
