The club could have a bit of a problem now.
The story is out that they want Nathan Jones, despite things being very advanced with Buckingham a few days ago.
But because the story is out, they will look even more incompetent if they don't get Jones.
I also don't see why the club would tell the BBC that they hope to make the appointment on Monday if they weren't confident.
Buckingham will have also read these stories and may well be thinking about other job possibilities there are for him.
The bookies have Jones as joint favourite - but don't how much weight to attach to that until someone goes into something like 1/10.

Is there actually a story or is there just unsubstantiated gossip which has fuelled the fire.

BBC reporting Jones is still in the frame so I'd say there is.

For what it’s worth anything about Des Buckingham is rumour and speculation, it just got treated as fact because that’s how it was presented. In reality it was only ever speculation
As fans we just have to sit tight and see how it plays out. As incompetent as our board are, the idea that Buckingham has had a contract offer paused on the off chance that someone else is now available is wild. There’s got to be so many details missing from any information that people have got their hands on.

I disagree.
All they have to say it ‘we spoke to Nathan Jones, and his vision doesn’t align with the clubs vision the same way that Des does.
You’re looking too far into this.

.
Then why let it get to the media in such a way? They didn't with other candidates.
You're not looking into this enough.

So you’re telling me that if Jones tells City that they can’t meet with terms, that City HAVE to say it, which makes them look like idiots?
You’re smarter than that Ned.

I doubt things would have reached the BBC and been released unless we had the intention of appointing Jones as well as having positive signals from his camp.

But the point is that your OP states the club would look ‘incompetent’ if they couldn’t pull off Jones.
Again I will (respectfully) disagree. I am not contesting that the club are confident of possibly pulling it off.
What I am saying is that your comment of them being ‘incompetent’ for failing to pull it off can be covered quite easily.
‘Can’t agree personal terms’
‘Committed to his project at Charlton’
Etc etc. To say that they would be ‘incompetent’ for failing to secure a manager from the division above us, is just wrong, imo.
But you’re entitled to your opinion.

Let's be honest - when things like this happen, 99% of the time the move ends up happening. Especially at our level.
I will stick by what I've said.

I reacted positively to a message board rumour on Buckingham, his odds dropped......But that's just the wild west of the internet.
The BBC is a different proposition. They are supposed to be respected journalists, not clickbaiters looking for ad revenue.
I thought cold water would have been thrown on this by now, but it has distracted the fans enough not to notice a soft deadline for the new manager has passed.
I'll be disappointed if it's not Jones, they have whetted my appetite, but I'll be even more disappointed if it's not Buckingham instead.
They are approaching messing up territory

Reading a Charlton forum, a lot of them seem pretty sure NJ isn’t going anywhere.
I hope that this NJ thing is a thought out decision and part of the plan. If the board have paid the Wasserman agency to carry out work on finding a new manager and then at the 11th hour they’ve gone out and approached NJ then it shows a total lack of planning.
Seems to me either Buckingham got cold feet so the board have made a knee jerk reaction to go for NJ (based on the fact the NJ thing came out of nowhere yesterday)
Or Buckingham was all set to come and for whatever reason the club have decided to put that on hold and approach NJ
If it’s the latter you’d think it would be hard to go back to Buckingham now if NJ doesn’t leave Charlton
