A forum for all things Cardiff City

Don’t get me wrong I know who he is, and that he’s a city fan, i also know he seemed to do a decent job at Luton and more recently Charlton, and I know he didn’t have a good time at Stoke or Southampton.
What i don't know is what his playing style is like, is it a defence first and nick a 1-0 win or is he attacking minded, what formation’s he likes etc
Does he come with his own coaches normally ?
From some posts on here, it comes across as it’s all about him, or is he actually a team player, is he more of a manager or a coach ??

Just to clear something up. When I said it's all about him, I mean all his theatrics on the touchline. We saw it in the play-offs, when he made sure the Sky cameras were on him and started being dramatic on the touchline.
Not saying that he manages a team in a way that's all about him - that probably isn't the case because he's had success.
His style is not pleasing on the eye. It is scrappy but again, he did enough to get Charlton up.
Charlton were poor in the first half of the season but really kicked on after Christmas. So if he does come in, hope people don't panic if we have a slow start.
The second half of their season was built on a strong defence. Only one team in the top twelve of League One scored less than them but they had the fourth best defence in the league.
No idea about coaches etc.

His man management skills got him out at Southampton. If he gets in here he'll make Colwills hair fall out.

Good; it may make him the player from the potential he has.

If he comes in, selling Rubin would be a brilliant first action I think.

About time we get a manager who won't take no shit.
Sun Jun 01, 2025 4:39 pm
he comes across as a no nonsense manager you buy into the way he wants you to play or your out some of our players need a shake up so I think he could do a good job for us plus he's a passionate Bluebird

I get the impression the boys call him gaffer rather than Nathan. I also doubt CR47 will give interviews, saying the players want him as he measures and reviews all their data on the bus home, ready for the day after briefing.
He'll put systems in that we don't have, recruitment will be important. Not winning the second ball is not an option, nor not running.
I think he'll love being the leader of Cardiff City and that matters the most to me!!!!

He will bring experience which we been calling out for has got.promoted from league one and championship he's a bluebird I went for Buckingham because I didn't think we would get Jones to be honest but Buckingham would be my first choice without Nathan Jones out of the picture hopefully Nathan Jones will be our next manager

Hopefully a team who occasionally win games.

Personality and character i think he really fits well.
He will totally understand our fan base and what our club is about.
Playing style he will be closer to Warnock and look for a solid don't conceded and we'll at least score 1 goal etc.
I can't see him getting on well with players like Robinson, Colwill, Daland, Tanner & Turnbull. He will want blood and thunder and won’t care too much about the talent bit.
I'd imagine he'd absolutely love the Salech type player.

Passion and a connection with the fans and a understanding what cardiff fans expect from the players also a love for the club not since warnock have we had such a manager,
in my book your half way to bringing us all together.

Potential dour football.
Our squad doesn’t appear to fit with him. We have youth here.
Des would appear a better shout.
Could be yet another miserable season.
Hope Not!

Why not say it as it is, Ned?
Jones plays a dire, defensive style of football that even the hardest Bulut fans would find unacceptable.
You’ve alluded to that in multiple threads - why not say it as you have before?

Because I said exactly that in another thread shortly before I posted in this thread. The comments here are the same, if slightly watered down.
I've been clear since the whole new manager debate started (before that actually) that Jones would not be my pick, while knowing a lot of our fans love him.
Have also consistently said that I would choose Buckingham over him every day of the week - partly due to the style of play.
My opinion is unchanged.

Agreed he could also help and get the best out of Robertson and turn him into a top player.

If he wasn't a Cardiff boy not many people would acknowledge him. The job he done at Luton was very good though, and he's proven he can get a team promoted. The football he plays is not very eye catching, but it depends what people want, do they want success or pretty football, I know I'd certainly prefer success not that it's guaranteed regardless of who we get.
My personal preference would be Rambo as the manager, has much more of a drive to do well her and already knows the squad. The 'experience' people want is notna guarantee, every manager starts somewhere and a fair few build a nice team and go through the leagues in successive years like McKenna at Ipswich. It's time for a rebuild, so we need someone to give the youth a chance. Jones and Buckingham don't have any track record of that as far as I'm aware.

What are you basing this on? Got any examples?
I've seen very tight/hard working teams who (usually) have width with the ball and are fast/direct in attack and then a solid unit without the ball. His Luton team were full of energy, width, relentless attacks. Even his Charlton team last year were similar, albeit knew when they had to grind out a win due to his limited resource and time to change.
Seen an excellent one about Des, here's Jones masterminding a Southampton win against Man City:
