What would you do if you were Nathan Jones?

Sun Jun 01, 2025 1:38 pm

So, it appears that the club have switched all attention to gambling everything on Nathan Jones - having been on the verge of appointing someone else.

I'm not one of those who are huge fans of Jones. I find him cringeworthy to watch, everything has to be about him. The style of play is also not great.

But, and to be fair this is the big thing, he has a track record of getting out of this league - including very recently with Charlton.

He's also hugely popular with the majority of our fans it seems. So I can see why the club are pursuing so much.

But what about from his point of view?

He is apparently not happy because the budget that Charlton have given him is quite small.

He has also been vocal about being a City fan and said he'd love the job one day.

But I also don't see him getting a big transfer budget with us - but especially if we have to pay £1m to release him from his contract.

So these are his options:

- Stay as Charlton manager in the Championship. He'll have a low budget but he'd be managing at the higher level

- Come to the club he's always wanted to manage. Funds would probably still be low but probably keep the majority of the squad that is there. Would be huge pressure on him to get promoted. He'd be working for an owner who it is known can be difficult to work with

You also have to bear in mind that Jones is 52 - he may not get a better opportunity to manage us.

Club hope to make the appointment on Monday so an interesting 24hrs ahead.

Well first thing I would do if I were him would be to double check his birth certificate as I think he always believed he was born in 1973 making him 52.

I made a typo when I said he was 59 - changed it now.

It would certainly feel to him like he's added seven years to his age if he became our manager

He won’t last the season and Plymouth will smash the league under Des.

Re: What would you do if you were Nathan Jones?

Difficult decision for him, but I'd expect him to stay with Charlton.
He's done a great job so far there with limit resources and they could certainly be challenging for promotion again next season. I guess the fans are on his side also; whilst Cardiff are currently a club in decline, which won't be easy to turn around with a very limited budget.
But, in all honesty, until the club actually name the new manager, all this speculation is proving ridiculous.
Nothing is certain until we get that club statement!

You think they will be challenging for promotion in the championship?

Re: What would you do if you were Nathan Jones?

Sun Jun 01, 2025 2:15 pm

He is a wealthy man, knows L1, the championship and has had a taste of the Premier League.

What is success for Charlton? Not being relegated, mid table. Do they have a chance at the playoffs? How many L1 playoff winners survive the championship? (I have no idea)

If Tan is going to stump up compensation, he must be serious. We allegedly have a great crop coming through, a striker who will be a division above. It could be fun and set us/him for a crack at the Premier League next season.

Will we average 14K next season in L1, yes, so its a bigger gig, he has always wanted it. The vacuum in leadership is perfect for him because he'll probably fancy incorporating the CEO's job as well.

This could also be a ploy to get a bigger budget at Charlton.

I'd come here, but I would say that of Arne Slot :bluescarf:

I agree with the club statement, but our enjoyment on forums is to speculate.

The club is in decline through piss poor leadership/management. Jones will fancy that. The squad is disjointed, but there is quality in there.
Daland, Salech, Robertson, Turnbull, Fish cost a fair bit, Tan has backed a poor system (Tan's system of giving it to rookies).

Be interesting how he would handle Rubin, my guess is he'd be sold.

Also got a team promoted and better football. Also a better person. So yeah, I’d prefer Des.

Played against him when I was younger, marked him out of the game :-)

Re: What would you do if you were Nathan Jones?

If I was a fan of another club, I may be swayed towards other options. But, as a City Fan, if Jones is available then it feels like a no brainer.

He essentially brings Jose/ Conte/ Simeone energy, but to a league 1 standard where it’s hugely effective.

Re: What would you do if you were Nathan Jones?

Sun Jun 01, 2025 2:47 pm

My gut feeling is that he'll stay with Charlton but only because of the hierarchy at Cardiff.
I personally think Cardiff are a bigger club than Charlton with much more potential however the problem is with how it's currently being run.

Yep.

Happy to be proved wrong if we get Jones.

Re: What would you do if you were Nathan Jones?

There also isn’t anything to suggest that this is a late pivot by the board, we’re all fans in the same boat trying to guess at what’s happening

There’s nothing to suggest that they’ve withdrawn a contract from a candidate and decided to pursue Jones

He may well have been number 1 candidate throughout and they were just waiting for the play offs to be complete before engaging - hence the “end of may” deadline they set themselves

Re: What would you do if you were Nathan Jones?

Sun Jun 01, 2025 2:58 pm

I get the impression Jones could start an argument in an empty room, luckily for him, Cardiff City leadership have many empty rooms so the vacuum would be perfect for him.

His weekly chat with Vinny would be fun though. "No, I am doing it my way way butt" . "I didn't want him, so am not playing him." Club buys :laughing6: :laughing6: :laughing6: :laughing6: :banghead: :argue:

Where here have I said it's Nathan Jones?? I'm purely going off the media reports.

I did say that Buckingham was offered the job and accepted - I stand by it because I trust and believe the source.

I also said the formalities were to be sorted.

Something has clearly changed with Jones' availability.

But not going to bother replying to people like you and as a moderator, have made the decision to give you a warning because of you using language that can be seen as a personal insult.

We don't accept that on here.

There was a verbal agreement with Buckingham but then the Jones availability changed.

Obviously no contracts signed with Buckingham so the club had the chance to pursue Jones.

My big worry is that Buckingham gets tired of waiting so goes somewhere else and Jones stays at Charlton.

So we're back at square one.

Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

People said why would Jones come here after getting promotion? As I said at time once promoted club needs to back manager with bigger funds and plans reading this thread get Impression he was not been given what he wants do he'll leave same going with manning playoffs but not backed so he's off to a club reporting to have 45m war chest... no loyalty in football from managers or players... and as for Buckingham he knows the score bet he was praying Jones wasn't available.. so he'll go somewhere else like others have done before in same situation.
