Who would you rather?

Fri May 30, 2025 8:41 pm

Obviously it’s not official as of yet as Ned posted in his original post.

If it turns out to be true, then there are those that believe that this isn’t a great appointment.

Who, realistically do you think would be a better appointment?

The key word here is ‘realistically’ - so don’t want to see Nathan Jones mentioned 50 times.

With respect this could/should have been put on the original thread rather than creating a new one! There’s nothing new or fresh here!

I’ve asked the question in the original thread.

No one answered it (presumably because they can’t think of anyone who is realistic and a better choice)

Dave Challiner.

I'd also be interested in the answer to this.

All the names some people come up with are just not happening - Cooper, Jones, Selles, Challinor etc are destined for a Championship job in the next six months.

We have good pull for some managers, but not them.

We are not the big attraction for managers that some think. Bottom line is we are a team that's just got relegated, but before that we flirted with relegation for years. That's how we are seen now - a bottom Championship club or a League One club.

Buckingham (when confirmed) is a great appointment and the perfect fit because of his ability of working well with young players.

We're a capital city with the largest stadium in the league. Why don't you think we are capable of attracting Selles (just sacked from Hull) or Challiner (with a much smaller Stockport in the same division as us, in the shadows of the two big Manchester clubs)?

Selles and Challiner are the calibre of managers we should be targeting, if we're really serious of mounting a promotion push. I'm sure if clubs like Sheffield Wednesday were still in League 1, they would be able to get Selles or Challiner pretty easily, so so can we.

People make way too big a deal about us being a capital city club. It means little.

Why would Challinor take another L1 job when he knows there's a Championship job probably waiting for him in a few months?

Selles told us he only wants a Championship job.

Being a capital city means a lot. It makes us a bigger pull than other clubs of a similar stature. We are the only sole capital city in the UK with only one club representing the capital. The opportunity for potential growth is massive, as long as we get the correct owners.

Does Challiner have Championship clubs after him now then? I would say a club like ourselves would be the next logical step forwards for him. He went from Fylde to Stockport when they were both in the same division, so I think we could tempt him, even if that means showing a bit more ambition and pushing the boat out to bring in a manager with a track record of success.

The right manager can turn an average player and team into a good player and team. The wrong manager can turn and average player and team into a poor player and team. Our next manager will be our most important signing of the season, so we need to show a bit of ambition to bring in the best manager for us.

Nathan Jones.

Des Buckingham as a decent alternative.

Alot of the Dave Jones/Malky era players quoted on podcasts Ive listened to that Cardiff/Capital.City being the reason to sign over like a Blackburn. It's definately a potential factor.

It also goes the other way though vs. London area, for example.

You would have thought it would. But the evidence doesn’t back your claim up at all. We are in league one by you way of thinking we just be minimum Top 4 premier league team.

I agree 100% with Worcester on this.
