Relegated teams' record in League One

Mon May 26, 2025 9:55 pm

Below is the record of teams who have been relegated from the Championship in their first season in League One.

This is over the last ten years.

2024/25

Birmingham - 1st
Huddersfield - 10th
Rotherham - 13th

2023/24

Blackpool - 8th
Wigan - 12th (eight points deducted)
Reading - 17th (six points deducted)

2022/23

Barnsley - 4th (not promoted in play-offs)
Peterborough - 6th (not promoted in play-offs)
Derby - 7th

2021/22

Rotherham - 2nd
Sheffield Wednesday - 4th (not promoted in play-offs)
Wycombe - 6th (not promoted in play-offs)

2020/21

Hull - 1st
Charlton - 7th
Wigan - 20th

2019/20 - season curtailed due to Covid

Rotherham - 2nd
Ipswich - 11th
Bolton - 23rd (12 points deducted)

2018/19

Barnsley - 2nd
Sunderland - 5th (not promoted in play-offs)
Burton - 9th

2017/18

Wigan - 1st
Blackburn - 2nd
Rotherham - 4th (promoted in play-offs)

2016/17

Bolton - 2nd
MK Dons - 12th
Charlton - 13th

2015/16

Wigan - 1st
Millwall - 4th (not promoted in play-offs)
Blackpool - 22nd

So, of these 30 teams, four have gone on to win the title - that means four out of the last ten seasons, a relegated team has won the league.

Ten have been promoted at the first attempt.

16 of the 30 have finished in the top six.

Two have had a second successive relegation - although Bolton had twelve points deducted when this happened to them.

Only 3 from 15 clubs since covid - in 5 seasons have gone back up in their first attempt :o

Doesn't bode well. I do not see us coming straight back up unless major changes are made

Thank you for providing that list Ned its very informative.

One thing that stands out to me is that, prior to 2021, there was a history of some relegated teams getting promoted but, in recent seasons, promotion seems to be more difficult.

The next 12 months are not going to be easy. If we have players who think they are too good for this division they will soon be found out. Division 1 is far different to the Championship and "Prima Donnas need not apply".

My worry is that our club has a history of stagnation and if we find ourselves around mid table then I suspect a downward spiral will appear over subsequent years.

For the future of our club I think this coming season we MUST break the trend and get promoted to the Championship immediately.

Depends on how you receive the data.

53% of the teams above have finished top 6. I assume most of us would take 6th as we sit here right now.

33% up auto. Decent rate that is, to me anyway.

Good original post! I'm surprised at the numbers. Thought it'd be lower for some reason.

Yeah, I was surprised by how many had gone straight back up to be honest - although recent seasons is a slight concern as Top Cat says.

What does encourage me is looking at Birmingham and Hull winning the league. Birmingham may be a special case because they had a high quality squad but Hull were in a similar position to what we're in now, and they managed to win the league.

Not going to make any predictions because it's far too early, but definitely thought this was worth looking at.

Oxford, Millwall and PNE have never played in the ‘Premier League’ so I’m presuming you mean they are the only team that have never been in the Top Tier?

That list tells me that we aren't bouncing straight back up. Unless we spend Brum levels, which Tan won't do

Like I said on another thread, it's a fool's game to predict anything for next season right now.

We'll know more when the manager is in, we've seen who gets sold and we see what the squad is.

After all that, we'll also be able to compare our squad to other squads. A few clubs doing limited business so far, but not much as it's very early days.

So the time for meaningful predictions is a long way off yet.

It would be more relevant for who has been relegated again, down to league 2. TAN OUT!

Which is included in the original post.

Two. That includes Bolton, who had 12 points deducted.

As much as I hate to say it but I think we are now in freefall, we got away with it last few seasons because of points deductions etc and the writing was on the wall. When you have a manager who says 8 cup finals and we only blag 5 points out of 24 that tells me lack of leadership on and off the pitch, lack of guts, lack of desire. I think many already had their eyes on moving on and I do not believe this about oh yeh they want to stay.

It is not beyond us to drop again though I would hope that we have something about us to stop that happening. This appointment is crucial for our survival on the pitch. Tan is Tan he is here and we have to get on with it. The Belgian club seem to be given the priority at the moment, is that detrimental to us or is there something in the background we don't know about, I have no idea. I would hazard a guess that financially there is more money to profit in the Championship than the Jupiler league.

Only my opinion of course and not getting into the supporting tan or not supporting tan debate, I support the team on the pitch and dtry not to get involved in the goings on around that but support those who want change. It is what it is and while he is here we can only hope that he does the right thing, whether he does or not I have no idea. I think support next season is crucial and will be interesting to see first home game and how it progresses or doesn't progress from there.

We wait... :bluebird:

So basically we’re doomed

Some use to go straight back up, now that’s not happening anymore.

It’s going to be far tougher than many realise and even more under this Regime.
