Just how much cost cutting

Sat May 24, 2025 7:12 pm

Is going to happen?

Where do they want the yearly wage bill to sit?

I’ve had a look at some figures and it seems that the average wage bill in L1 is roughly the 7m mark annually.

Now I don’t know exactly what our wage bill is, but it’s reported around 15m per year.

That’s a lot of cost cutting if the board are trying to get under the 10m mark.

As for wages for new signings - how much is too much?

Will we see anyone brought in on more than 10k a week? If so, is that too much?

In league 1 wages are 60% of overall income.

Contracts signed of 3 years or more before September 2024 are not included in the 60% rule for relegated clubs so it would be players signed in January or new contracts?

This would be Salech, odowda, Robinson and Alnwick?

I can't imagine we would struggle to pay those wages so it's a matter of how much tan wants to invest..

Interestingly, fees paid for players or compensation is no object. I guess that explains how Birmingham spent so much.

When it comes to incoming players, it depends on how many leave.

The squad is far too big and needs to be cut down.

So for example, if ten left then I wouldn't expect ten to come in to replace them - more like five or six.

I have no doubt players will be sold, but who and will it be the correct ones, if we are to move on AND cut our costs, it will need to ve carefully managed and it will depend on who has relegation release clauses
