SPURS WIN THE EUROPA LEAGUE

Europa League Final:

Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United - 8pm, Wednesday

Updated

Manchester United play Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League Final on Wednesday night in Bilbao.

The winner will not only get the trophy but also qualify automatically for next season's Champions League group stages along with the Premier League top five - and all the extra money that comes with this.

United are 16th in the Premier League and Spurs are 17th with one game to go.

Whichever two teams from Manchester City, Nottingham Forest, Chelsea and Aston Villa that miss out on the top five will rightly be aggrieved to see United or Spurs in the CL next season.

How is this fair and should the Europa League winners not get automatic entry into the Champions League in future seasons?

They all knew the rules before the season started & the winner of the Europa League is at least a champion of something rather than 5th runner up in a league. It might not seem fair this season but thems the breaks as they say.

That's my 2 pence worth.

It's decent now ,as the teams never took it seriously untill the champions league qualification was introduced.

Personally don’t see the problem. That’s how it was set up. I have seen this debate in a few places over the last week though. Wonder if the same thing would be said if it was more of an outsider. Like an Everton or Fulham for example. I think people would revel in it then. It’s just that it’s Spurs and Utd IMO.

100%, and to be fair both sides have been decent in the Europa this season so there is some credit that needs to be there.

TBF, Bottling Hotspur and ManUre have been up against far inferior opponents throughout each round of this competition - I'd argue that both teams were expected to get to the final, given their squads and massive wage bills.

I think it’s completely fair.

Everyone knows that the winner qualifies for the champions league - it’s not as though they have just picked a random team, it’s still winning a major European trophy.

Winning the FA cup qualifies a team for the Europa League - if we had won it back in 2008, would you have said it was unfair on the premier league teams that a championship club was in Europe?

Could always argue that being a 4th division side and qualify for Europe, to play aarhus, through winning the Welsh Cup wasnt fair.

But I enjoyed the trip to Denmark and the ferry there and back

They are the rules, it just reinforces that the EPL is the daddy.

The top two in Spain can give the EPL representatives a game. One in France, sometimes two in Italy and Germany, but thats it.
By the time you get to the sixth best teams in each of those league, they get beaten by the sixth best in the Premier and I reckon all the way down to 20th

I guess Man Utd (16th in PL) beating Bilbao (4th in La Liga) in the semi finals sort of proves your point.

Game starts in less than 45 minutes.

I can see United winning. Have the experience of winning trophies recently. Spurs are missing big players too.

I remember Aarhus, it was in the middle of Aarstreet in Denmark, if I recall right?

Loved those days. They were always short lived but exciting!

Not able to watch the game tonight, as I'm away and having phone and internet issues but I'm rooting for Spurs tonight. I live in hope but I think ManUre may just have too much up front for Spurs leakier than ours defence

This obsession with ball-playing keepers makes you recruit L2 standard goalkeepers when it comes to the art of keeping goal.

Spurs 1-0 up in an apparently tense game that neither team want/can afford to lose after the season they've both had!

A great (some might say unwarranted but you can only win what you're in) reward for the victors awaits :ayatollah:

10 minutes to go, Spurs 1-0 up.

It's been a terrible final to be fair.

BREAKING: TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR WIN THE EUROPA LEAGUE

They beat Manchester United 1-0 in the final in Bilbao.

They also qualify for next season's Champions League.

You have to say it was a terrible final and Man Utd were abysmal.

FINAL SCORE: SPURS 1 - 0 MAN UNITED (90+10 mins)
Scorer: Luke Shaw, og 43 mins

A massive win for Spurs and heartbreak for Man Utd. The irony is not lost in the facts of both teams over the season that the winning goal was conceded by an own goal

Sounds like a disappointing game overall but the final stat is the one that sees the Premier League's 17th placed Spurs into the Champions League for next season

Congratulations to them! :ayatollah:

Great that Wales’ Brennan Johnson had a big ‘assist’ and some outlets saying it was his goal :ayatollah:

And just realised Spurs’ manager Ange Postecoglu kept up his ‘second season trophy’ act up; despite the season they’ve had   :ayatollah:

ManUre have asked about his availability! :laughing6:

I'm delighted for Ange. He kept his word and delivered a trophy.

Had a really tough time from the media too, was called a clown by one journalist this week.

He'll probably lose his job in the summer so a nice thing for him to go out on.

Agree, Ned; although I think they'll go with him again next season. The problem at Spurs lies with poor recruitment and injuries rather than poor management. They have the core of a very good team on paper and a few back fit plus some new additions should make the difference :ayatollah:
