Not many clubs bounce

Mon May 19, 2025 7:30 pm

Straight back up.

The general consensus on here is that we will bounce straight back up to the championship.

It won’t be that easy I fear.

In the last 15 years, I can only think of four times where a team has bounced straight back up.

Wolves, Rotherham, Blackpool and of course Brum.

Before I get any responses saying how big a club we are and how we are massive, plenty of bigger clubs have found it difficult to get out of the league.

Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Forest, to name a few that took time to get back out of the division.

Spot on.

Birmingham made it look easy but we're not going to spend £15m this summer, let alone spending that much on one player.

So it won't be easy.

That said, if we finish outside the top six then it has to be seen as a failure.

I will accept it if it takes us two seasons to get out of this league. Any longer I would not accept.

Sadly, there’s a high probability that we will struggle in league 1.

Mid table would be a positive.

Everything is so disjointed.
The regime has lost the last of their fans.
No trust, no faith, no plan

I think we have a slight advantage that nearly every under-performing player and the inept manager won't be here. Didn't Sunderland have Jack Rodwell on insane wages on a long contract.

Will we miss ElGarzi, Collins, Meite or Goutas who fell off a cliff in performance?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Robinson, Horvath, Willock, Turnbull want out either. If they are gone early we still have a dent core to add L1 player into.

Let's just hope we get out of this league upwards & not down to league 2. It's not really that long ago that we almost fell out of the league all together so this "we're too big to fail" crap from some people (not you) needs to stop & they need to wake up to the reality of where we are as a club while the head clown is still here.

Matt,

Personally I agree with you and def under these Clowns I don’t expect to go straight back up.

You need money spent and a very strong good management team.

We have been relegated to what used to be called the third division on three occasions since the war. On the first two occasions we bounced straight back up again. On the final occasion it took us nearly 20 years to get back!!

We definitely have the base of players to come straight back up. Just need one or two players with pace and a giant thug at CB and CM (both who take no prisoners....including team mates). Oh, and a manager with a similar attitude. :bluebird:

I think it's safe to say if we are not pissing the league by November there'll be blood on the moon. Any new gaffer will be aware of this I hope.

Not sure if it's possible but I'd write up a contract for them saying - Bonuses for top 2 by xmas and a lesser bonus for top 6 -8. Plus possibility of sacking if in bottom 8- 10. :bluescarf:

I think/hope we will bounce back up purely because the squad was way too good to go down in the first place. A lot of the teams mentioned may also have thought this of course but I genuinely still believe with a top manager at this level we were a mid table Championship team, maybe even top 10 squad. A combination of an inexperienced (and awful) manager, and some big name players under performing the entire season plus injuries was just a mixing bowl of shitness which has led to us being in this position. If we can keep the core of the team, add some pace on the wing, another exoerienced CB to play alongside Fish and combine that with some of the talent we have coming through that may not have been ready for Championship but may be ready for L1 then I think we will be a force to be reckoned with. It won't be easy at first but we will adapt and be alright.

With the squad as it stands I think it's going to be a struggle. Not many battlers and players who care in that dressing room.

anyone who thinks we are getting out of league 1 is deluded. we are there until tan goes and we have serrious investment. get used to league 1. could even go down to 2 if we keep the same old of trash

Slight overreaction :D You would keep 2 out of whole squad? Ng, Fish, O'Dowda, Chambers, Robertson, Rambo, Colwill, Robinson, Salech, Bagan, Turnbull, Meite....all of these are more than gpod enough for L1. Youngsters like Lawlor and J.Colwill could be too but need to be used sparingly. We will still recruit as we have to. The players are good enough, they need a manager to get them playing with a style or with direction at least and they need coaches to get their fitness up. Riza was more than just a bad manager he seemed to sap all energy from the team, the cheap coaching staff did not work.
That is what needs to change, the squad is the best in the league.

That’s IF we kept all of those players, and even then saying it’s the best squad in the league is a bit of an exaggeration to be fair.

We finished bottom of the championship, so the two teams coming down with us arguably have better squads.

I agree with this. After last summer's window, a lot of us overestimated the quality of our squad - I say us because I was one of them.

Don't want to be in danger of thinking the same again. And like you say, our squad will likely get stripped apart over the next couple of months.

But I wouldn't go as far to say that I'd only keep two players, as others have done in this thread.

Agree regarding complacency but I still stand by my belief that we have (currently) the best squad in L1, Luton maybe could argue that but no other team could. We finished 24th yes, but allowing a manager like Riza and his coaching to stay around for too long was the reason and not the quality of the squad. We definitely overestimated the talent recruited last summer with El Ghazi in particular disappointing. I also forgot to add Ashford and Davies in my list, with Ashford in particular I feel going to have a good season. We may lose a few players but I don't think the club have to sell, we just need a manager and coaches who can get these players to perform. If we do, we will bounce back up.
