MEHMET / CHOO WILL YOUR WAGES BE CUT AS WELL?

Does not the New Manager Decide?

Cardiff City squad to be cut for League One as summer transfer plans revealed

Cardiff City chairman Mehmet Dalman has spoken about what the transfer window will look like for the club after dropping into League One

“We have though no intentions of selling any of our players.”

“The squad is too bloated as it stands.”

“We need to cut back by at least eight players this summer.”

"Out of the eight who are out of contract, we would probably lose six, maybe five. There may be a couple that we still want to have conversations with. That will bring us to a sensible number. We probably need to add three or four players into the team."

Cardiff have eight players whose contracts will expire this summer and the vast majority of those are expected to leave.

Cardiff City's squad will be cut down considerably ahead of the League One campaign:

The Bluebirds are preparing for their first summer transfer window in the third tier for more than two decades and the importance of it is not lost on anyone. If Cardiff are to bounce straight back up to the Championship, they have to get this window right.

Dalman Continues:

Club captain Joe Ralls is one of those who sees his deal end next month, with the midfielder just one game short of triggering a year's extension last season. It is a mark of the man that, even knowing he wouldn't reach the requisite number of games, he still played the final two matches half-injured in a bid to help the club stay up.

Were Cardiff still in the Championship, it might have been a more difficult conversation. However, in League One, there seems to be an agreement that Ralls could play a big part both on and off the pitch.

Another player the Bluebirds are likely to hold talks with over remaining with the club is Andy Rinomhota. The former Reading man enjoyed his best season in a City shirt and claimed the players' player of the season gong at the end-of-season awards. Sources at the club have indicated that, in an ideal world, he would be tied down to a new deal.

The other question mark sits above the head of Aaron Ramsey. His current deal is up next month, too, and it's as yet uncertain as to whether the extra year option will be triggered. At this stage it does seem difficult to fathom that the Wales captain will play in League One next season, unless some hybrid role incorporating off-pitch duties in some capacity appeals to him.

“Aaron is a wonderful chap," Dalman said of the 34-year-old. "I got to know him quite well over the last couple of years and we will sit down with Aaron and have a chat.

"Aaron is through and through Cardiff and, whatever we discuss, it'll be good for Cardiff and it'll be good for Aaron.”

Dalman continues:

“That’s not in our plans to sell," he said of having to sell players. "We will sell players if somebody comes up with an attractive offer. We would consider it, but that's true of every season at any given time. That is nothing to do with our circumstances.”

“But we have no intentions of selling our players.”

"We are very determined to keep the core of the team together, and the feedback we are getting from the core of the team is to stay together.

"I'm sure there'll be a few who will not fancy staying in League One. We will respect that, although we will expect them to respect their contracts as well.”

In terms of a recruitment strategy, Dalman admits there might be need to bring in experienced League One players in order to produce a promotion tilt. "I’d like to think we will stay focused on a Championship return but sometimes you may need League One players to get you there," he added. "I think that's a question for the manager."

There will also be players who some fans feel owe them a season in League One and will be disappointed if they left after going down. Equally, many feel it represents a chance for Cardiff's exciting young cohort to really grab the division by the scruff of the neck and show that they are capable of being too good for League One.

The likes of Isaak Davies, Rubin Colwill, Joel Colwill, Cian Ashford, Joel Bagan, Eli King, Ronan Kpakio, Dylan Lawlor, Luey Giles, Tanatswa Nyakuhwa, Troy Perrett and other academy products will be champing at the bit for a shot at League One and regular game time.

Many of them have shown flashes of what they can do, but a sustained run, full of confidence, in League One could do these players wonders. Indeed, Dalman said that any prospective manager's plans on how to incorporate these youngsters will form an integral part of the interview process to find Omer Riza's permanent successor.

"We've got some of the brightest, most promising youngsters coming through the academy," Dalman added.

"The new manager, that will play a key role in the interview process, how they’re going to use experienced players with this new generation of talented young boys. And we will take it from there.”

Not surprised that he's said this. The finance director said a couple of months ago that there would be cutbacks if we got relegated.

He says he doesn't want to sell any players. But I still expect a few to be sold.

He's right that the squad is far too big. We have given two or three year contracts to players who are average at best.

But we also need to bring in players who know League One so that means a few need to be moved on - hopefully just fringe players.

Interesting that he says there are conversations with two players out of contract - I'd assume that's Ramsey and Ralls.

Who are out of contract?

Goutas
El Ghazi
Collins
Ramsey
Ralls
Meite
Rinomhota

Could get rid of all 7 and not lose too much.

Defence we have cover at centre back and right back. Central midfield we have a lot of numbers so that allows for Goutas, Rino and Ralls to be covered for as much as I like all three. Ramsey clearly isn’t fit enough so won’t be missed. Collins hasn’t been in the squad so wouldn’t be missed. El Ghazi has been a complete waste of time and money. Meite would probably do alright league one but I don’t think he will want to stay even if we wanted him to at a reduced wage.

I don't see how our squad is bloated, we should ideally have a backup for every position in our starting 11, plus a few versatile players who can fill several positions and a couple of youngsters. We currently have:

GK - Alnwick, Horvath and Turner

LB - Bagan and Collins

CB - Chambers, Daland, Fish, Goutas, Lawlor

RB - NG, Kpakio

CM - Ralls, Rinomhota, Ramsey, Colwill, Robertson, Turnbull

WF - O'Dowda, Ashford, Tanner, Davies, Willock, El Ghazi

ST - Salech, Robinson, Meite and Simic

Unless I've missed anyone out, that's a squad of 28 players, but I'm expecting Goutas, Meite and Collins to leave, leaving us with a squad of 25.

I think others will leave too and we will have yet another rebuilding job, which will hopefully not be filled with just more free transfers and loans to make us sink even further!

You've not counted loans ? Whilst not permanent they made up the squad and will do this season aswell.... but your right need decent players to replace those that leave or could sink further.. need ho be fighting for top places early on to set up season.

On paper our squad should be good enough to come straight back up (on paper it shouldn’t have got relegated)

However, without a decent Manager, a few leaders in the pitch and a couple of dogs in the team it won’t get promoted

Get the Manager and coaching staff right, spend a few million on a few no nonsense old heads and we will be challenging

I have every confidence that 3/4 of our youngsters will flourish in a decent team

To me Nathen Jones is the obvious candidate for the job

King and (the other) Colwill.

O’Dowda is a left back now I think.

There were always going to be cuts in the budget. It was inevitable.

Unfortunately in business it’s always the workforce who get make redundant or have their salary/contracts lowered not the top management. That’s how it is.

Will be an interesting summer and I’m looking forward to and I’m quite excited about league one now the disappointment and the dust has settled.

For me the main two players I would keep without question are Ralls and Rhinomhota.
Maybe Meite
Ramsey can go but I’ve a feeling he’ll stay.

Re: Breaking: Cardiff City squad to be cut for League One as

Was always going to happen. I’d keep Ralls as well need his experience and fight but all other out of contract players can go.

I’ll drive Meite anywhere he wants to go. How someone who’s shown such distain to the fans is still being touted as a player to stay is beyond me.

I don’t think it matters much what they say regarding keeping players. If we get a decent manager and someone with football knowledge (DoF) then they should decide. Eg imho we have a number of promising young players who will do well. If at all possible hang on to Salech. On the other hand we should be selling 30 yr old Robinson or even just getting rid so someone else can pay his wages. There are a couple of others who may be not out of contract but showed a lack of commitment talent or even effort who could also go. (But thats just opinion).
