Surprise new name 'placed on shortlist' for vacant Cardiff City manager job
By Glen Williams
Salford City's Karl Robinson has been linked with the manager's role at Cardiff City.
The Bluebirds are on the lookout for their next manager following the sacking of Omer Riza last month, with midfielder Aaron Ramsey having taken the last three games as interim boss, during which time the club's relegation to League One was confirmed.
Ramsey himself said that it would be beneficial for the club to act quickly in getting in a new manager and to ensure the right backroom staff were also appointed.
And Football Insider claim that veteran boss Karl Robinson, who has vast experience in the Football League, is under consideration for the manager's post at Cardiff City Stadium and has been shortlisted among a number of applicants.
Robinson, 44, has enjoyed lengthy stints at all of his previous clubs. He took charge of MK Dons six years and achieved promotion out of League One in 2015, but suffered relegation the following year.

It’s got to the point now that I’d take anyone to stop us promoting within.

Tan needs to see the bigger picture with this manager. We need to pick a manager with a footballing style which we’re going to build the team around and look to sign the sort of player who fits in that style.
For too long managers have been appointed on the cheap, with no plan or identity and that is what’s caught up with us in the end. This is a chance to clear out the dead wood in the club and have a fresh start, not just make the same mistakes again

Karl Robinson would have attractive football.

He is the abrasive sort of manager I think fits our fanbase.
I enjoyed watching him turn the Salford team around on that Sky documentary. He doesn't suffer fools or prima donnas.

Brings experience of the league. Done a decent job at a few places.
Wouldn't be against this.

What i like is that there is no pretension of him being a future Premier League manager, he is an EFL manager and knows the players and charaters you need in a succesful team.
In our club, it's about recruiting the right sort of player through the door first rather than matchday tactics and philosophies.

Just reading through his managerial statistics as I don't know much about him and was surprised at how good his league 1 record is, 1 promotion and 4 play off finishes

Also seems he is used to working under a director of football as Ryan giggs holds that position at Salford (yes I know he also owns a share of the club)

Thought giggs promoted to a coach in some capacity .. at end day we need an experienced coach and club is not going to please everyone so unless rambo with two others take control its whoever club decides is best candidate to take club forward like all clubs do when shortlisting candidates...

I wouldn’t be against this either.
He’s got bags of experience and is still young.
Virtually any manager is a gamble but some more than others.

Yes he would.
He’s very much like Dave Jones even down to the accent.

We would be the biggest club he's ever managed.

Knows the league well .

Warnock was 51 when he took on Sheffield United, he had done his time. They were his biggest club to that point (and his club) and then went on to better things.
I'd love Nathan Jones if that was even remotely doable, Challinor deserves a step up and Robinson has done his time.
We can not mess around, we need to build, act like the biggest club in L1 with a young team, blood it, add more leaders and plan for 26/27 back in the championship.
Tan isn't getting a DoF or any decent structure so we need an old school general manager

Not the best though.

Your talking about Vincent Tan there, expecting him to do things in a sensible constructive way is like putting money on Wales to win the rugby world cup.
We all know the maniac will do things his own way making his own decision on choice of manager, unfortunately until he sells up I sincerely doubt we will see much change in the way our beloved club is run, it's so sad how he's run us into the ground.

Are you thinking of Carl Robinson, the Welsh international?
Mon May 05, 2025 7:06 pm
Robinson could not put up with Tans interference and he would end up getting sacked for telling Tan to feck off.
If Tan and his 2 henchmen dalman and choo the chuckle brothers stay out of the football and let Robinson do a job then we may stand a chance but as we all know from ex players and managers Tan interferes

I think some people forget which league we are playing in next season. The names we are going to be linked with is not going to be pretty compared to the names we were being linked with in the championship. We need to accept it.

I haven't gone back to Ashurst or Eddie May, as it was a different world back then
Lennie- 10 seasons before city
DJ- 6 season at bigger clubs before us
Malky- 2 season same divison as city
Warnock - a million games
I am not saying experience guarantees anything, it doesn't, but having little no experiance has never paid dividends at the city.

Sorry I think we should go for a more experienced manager if we are going to have a good push for next season

He is experienced. You'd find few managers who are available to us that have a better record in League One.
Some people seem to still think we're in the Championship. We're not, and managers like Robinson are what we should be looking at.
Mon May 05, 2025 10:46 pm
I remember Robinson being linked to the managers job here - back when he was at Charlton/Oxford at the time 2016-18.
Mon May 05, 2025 11:09 pm
I'd be quite happy with this appointment. Got a very good track record in the EFL. Exactly what we need.
Nathan Jones is still my number 1 choice but just can't see that happening.

Pep wouldn't be good enough for some people plus he would have been hounded out by now with his record this season.

Hope this is how the club are thinking now.
Poaching instead of unemployed, just missing out on Play-Offs and knows the lower leagues.
