I have been wondering, for some time, whether relegation to Division 1 is part of Tans plan and, whilst this may appear an unusual statement, the FFP rules are different in the 3rd Tier as they are to the Championship.
FFP Rules in the Championship - Profit & Sustainability ("P&S")
P&S rules apply in the Championship and clubs are allowed to lose a maximum of £39m over 3 seasons
FFP Rules in Divsion 1 - Salary Cost Management Protocol ("SCMP")
SCMP rules apply in Division 1 and clubs are allowed to spend 60% of their turnover on salaries (75% for relegated clubs)
Advantages
If timed right a good championship player can be bought, whilst in division 1, so as to ensure that purchase does not appear within the "P&S" rules.
Birmingham have, for example, spent £35m on going straight back up.
What do we know so far:
(a) At the start of this season Tan wanted £200m for the club
(b) We had several interested parties looking to spend in the region of £100-120m for the club
(c) According to Mehmet Tan is covering our monthly expenditure of £3m per month (£36m per year)
(d) If relegated our income will reduce but so will our salary expenditure. I would expect it to drop to £1-2m per month or £24m per year.
(e) The club will accrue somewhere between nothing and £80m when the Sala settlement is reached
(f) If relegated, and at a lower price, we will be a far more attractive price to potential purchasers
Tans Options
For me I think he has 3 choices:
1) He can invest like Birmingham in the sum of £35m, and meet the £1-2m monthly expenses (£24m), to get us promoted knowing that investment wont appear of P&S rules.
2) He can maintain the £1-2m monthly expenses and we keep the status quo and be a mid table division 1 side
3) He can try to sell the club for £80m and hopefully someone else can invest and take us up.
What do we think Tan will do?

Fingers crossed he won’t be here next season.
