Labour were spending our children's futures like lunatics well before the financial crisis hit - e.g. expanding the public sector workforce from 5.2 million to 6.1 million. The failure of financial regulation and the warnings (ignored) were firmly on their watch - they were in power for 10 years before the crisis "surfaced". In any event, the financial crisis is probably the least of our problems. Looking beyond the PSND as a measure of the British state's indebtedness is truly shocking:
