Drivers wearing 'three items of clothing' could be fined £5,000 from Sunday

Birmingham Daily Mail

16th November 2024

With icy roads and cold temperatures setting in from Sunday, it's important to remember that wearing the wrong footwear or clothing while driving could impact your ability to safely control your vehicle

Many drivers are unaware of wearing gloves, coats OR scarves could lead to hefty fines and points on your licence. With icy roads and cold temperatures setting in from Sunday, it's important to remember that wearing the wrong footwear or clothing while driving could impact your ability to safely control your vehicle, resulting in tough penalisation from the DVLA.

Liam Barnes, Manager at TopReg , warned: “Winter is a challenging time of the year to be hitting the roads, and this is made even worse if there’s a sudden cold snap like the one we’re expecting this week. During this time, if drivers aren’t careful, it’s easy to make costly mistakes resulting in huge fines and even penalty points on licences.”

He said: "Leaving your winter jacket on while driving is a common mistake during colder months, as chilly mornings and slow-to-warm cars make it tempting to stay bundled up. However, this small action can distract you from the road, potentially resulting in a £100 fine and points on your licence for careless driving if stopped by police.Removing bulky coats, gloves, and scarves before setting off is crucial. While it may feel cold initially, these items can obstruct movement, reduce grip, or impair visibility, increasing the risk of accidents.

Mental place. If I were single I’d have moved out of this country a long time ago.

This is not a new law.

This has been in place for a long time.

Annis this rag continously puts out rubbish like this! You'll be hard to find someone getting points or fine for wearing a scarf while driving? :D

Don't worry a labour P wants maternity language to be reflective of trans gender males who have had babies (there's been a couple) this follows on from xray staff being told to ask males if they could be pregnant ? Now that is bonkers.. :o

This really is a whole bunch of nothing.

It has always been the case that you could be fined and/or receive points for something that may impede your driving ability, it's nothing new and I can remember something in the highway code about being able to see & move unimpeded when driving & the last time I looked at that was almost 45 years ago.

Said similar in my initial reply to this post. It's not a new law at all.

If people actually read the OP, it says that the cold weather was kicking in last Sunday - not the law coming in on the Sunday.

Not being pedantic ned but this is "quote " what was put....
(Drivers wearing 'three items of clothing' could be fined £5,000 from Sunday) to me that implies it's starting from Sunday ... but right not new law but as said this rag constantly puts out crap like this. ..
