El Ghazi (a slight negative)

Sat Oct 19, 2024 5:32 pm

Really great performance and win today.

But I have a slight negative which is Anwar El Ghazi.

Yes, he got his goal. But otherwise he struggled.

He's had a run in the team and not offered much. What will it take for him to be dropped?

Willock scored a good goal today so it will be interesting to see whether he's still below El Ghazi in the pecking order for Pompey.

In fairness your judgement of Colwill suggests you wouldn’t know a footballer if one kicked you up the backside.
The guy has played very little football in the last year. He is a fabulous footballer, who will only get better.

So are you content with his performances?

Do you think he's an improvement on Grant?

Has he improved us?

Tend to agree all our forwards are playing catch up regarding
Positioning and getting to know who's around them thanks to buluts defensive
strategy... His goal must been 1st time been within opposition 6yrd box he saw what was happening and was there to tap in...... expect yo see more of ghat from him snd the others if get a chance.

That’s not the first time you’ve had a little ‘pop’ at Ned in recent times, is it? ;)

It certainly is about ‘opinions’ but let’s just hope you can take it back when it’s due; or are you another member of ‘one direction’…? ;) :ayatollah:

Hard to say right now but we know what he is capable of.

Fitness maybe okay but sharpness on the field may take time after so much time away from competitive games.

Once he gets the rhythm and feel back, we should see a better player and hopefully an important one.

He engages defenders. He is a an obvious threat to the opposition. Who else would play in that position?

He scored a goal by being in the right position. He anticipated Colwill’s movement . He needs to improve, his fitness, it is lacking and his pace is off.

He will provide more goals and assists than Grant. Look at the stats from last season. His movement is very good. He allows space for Robinson to drift wide and O’Dowda to overlap. He is quality.

At some point, footballers lose that couple of percent that makes them a top footballer. He may have crossed that line, His saving grace is I don't think we have a replacement. I don't think Willock is a wide forward.

He is not blowing out his arse, the timing is all wrong. Its a tough call for the (interim) manager

Fair play, that's a detailed response and I hope you're right that he'll come good.

By the way I never criticised Rubin as a player, just his ability to make a real impact. He did that today.

His football intelligence is way above what we are used to. If he regains his sharpness. It’s a big if, he will improve us, so much.

I agree, this isn't Ricky Lambert when after 10 mins of the season you realise whatever pace and mobility he had deserted him and he was going to waddle around the centre circle.
But, it is four years since he played English football and it's quicker than Dutch football, so I hope he is getting that timing back on the other hand, it may just be a bit too rushed for him nowadays. I don't know

He looked better today than previous appearances, but he overhit almost all crosses by quite some distance so there is definitely room for improvement still.

For me his quality is there. Its just slowly coming back the more he plays. I'm also wondering if it's still a bit of confidence with him at the moment. As 1 or 2 times from where I was it looked as if he could of shot? But took extra touch/passed/cut inside etc. Also I thought this was apparent in 1st half when he went down just outside the box for very little contact. Although he won the free kick I thought a confident player would of gone into box and got the shot away.

Re: El Ghazi (a slight negative)

I think he’s getting better each game, both fitness and movement.

He made some great runs yesterday. Some great touches as well.

Some flicks and tricks didn’t come off, and his timing in some runs got him caught offside. However, he’s making runs in behind the defence that is something we haven’t been doing. Grant didn’t do that, he ran at them.

You’ve hit the nail on the head there. Not just about El Ghazi, but for a lot of the team yesterday. Football Intelligence. Positioning, instinct and movement off the ball, was all about that.

Re: El Ghazi (a slight negative)

Sun Oct 20, 2024 11:25 am

Yesterday was a game where we started to see how good he could be for us.

He started off slowly but after the first goal he got himself into the game and you could see him screaming for the ball and making runs off it.

His sharpness is still not quite there but it’s coming. His confidence to try little flicks and try the unusual is something that we need and will compliment Colwill and Ramsey as we go through the season.

Re: El Ghazi (a slight negative)

Did everyone see the way the players reacted to his goal, they were all proper made up for him, probably because they know what he is capable of and that the goal is what he needed to get his confidence up.

If anyone knows if he still has it, it will be his team mates and they obviously loved the fact he scored, more so for him than what the goal meant to the scoreline.

Yeah he seemed reluctant to celebrate then the others come over and we're all happy for him then he started to cheer.

More he plays better he will get, he makes the runs and everything seems to get in open space alot just things don't quite come off which will come. Can't really see who can take his spot, he causes problems

Re: El Ghazi (a slight negative)

I thought El Ghazi was the week link.
Looked lost on occasion.
The saving grace was Meite coming on and kanga.

While EL Ghazi n
ay improve,,

Both meite and kanga are completely at odds with the way we played and not enough individual quality to impact a game.
They're blocking space for others..
