If Leicester fail to get promoted: They’ll probably have

If Leicester fail to get promoted:

They’ll probably have a points deduction next season

Have to sell their best players in the summer

Possibly have a transfer embargo so can’t sign anyone

The embargo also means they can’t renew contracts

I thought it was a Premier League sanction and wouldn't be actioned until (if) they returned to the Premier League.

That's also true. And confirmed!! They're not in a good place.

Hopefully they come straight back down if they go up. Been throwing money at it for ages with little regards for FFP

The EFL has confirmed it cannot apply a points deduction from the Premier League to Leicester City this season.

Leicester were charged by the Premier League for an alleged breach of its profit and sustainability rules (PSR) last month and referred to an independent commission. Such commissions have sanctioned Everton, twice, and Nottingham Forest with points deductions this season.

But as Leicester were relegated from the Premier League at the end of last season, they are now under the EFL umbrella as a Championship club.

Following that charge, Leicester issued “urgent legal proceedings” against the EFL and the Premier League.

One element of those proceedings was an application for an interim injunction to prevent the EFL from imposing a sporting sanction — i.e. a points deduction — on the club this season.
On Friday, though, the EFL confirmed that, “having taken legal advice”, it does not have the power to apply any points deduction ordered by a Premier League independent commission.

The EFL added that Leicester’s injunction application “was neither necessary nor appropriate” and has been dismissed.

Any potential points penalty issued by the independent commission Leicester has been referred to will therefore apply next season.

Leicester are currently under an EFL registration embargo, which prevents them from signing new players or new contracts with their existing squad members, after filing its PSR calculation for the three-year reporting period ending this season.

If Leicester are found to have breached PSR for the period ending this season, they would be eligible for an EFL sporting sanction. Similarly, Premier League side Sheffield United face a two-point deduction at the start of their next season in the Championship after the EFL announced a sanction on the South Yorkshire club after they “defaulted on a number of payments to other clubs” during the 2022-23 season — in which they competed under the EFL’s jurisdiction in the second tier.
