Forgotten Leeds signing Jean-Kevin Augustin becomes most expensive player per-appearance in football history

Leeds United have withdrawn their appeal against paying £24.5million in compensation for Jean-Kevin Augustin.

The striker signed for Leeds on loan from RB Leipzig in January 2020 during the season they won promotion from the Championship to the Premier League.

The deal involved Leeds having an obligation to buy him for £18million - should they win promotion that season.

However, after playing just 48 minutes due to falling out of favour with manager Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds pulled out of signing him permanently despite going up.

They claimed a delay in finishing the season due to Covid-19 meant the clause in the deal elapsed.

Leipzig, though, complained to FIFA, who ruled in April 2023 that Leeds must pay Augustin £24.5million, with FIFA documents showing his deal was set to be a five-year contract worth £93,000-per-week with a signing on fee of £2.5million.

Now, according to The Athletic, Leeds have withdrawn their appeal against this fee with the Court of Arbitration of Sport.

That means former Paris Saint-Germain player Augustin has become the most expensive player in football history in terms of cost per appearance.

The fee works out at £13,715-per-second for his 48 minutes for Leeds four years ago.

The club, FIFA and Augustin's agent declined The Athletic's request to comment.

Should third-place Leeds not achieve promotion back to the Premier League this season and reap the financial benefits of that, they may well need to sell some of their keys players to avoid breaching the EFL's Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire reported that of the £190million Leeds still have to pay out for players, they are only receiving £2 million in player sales.

Leeds take on Blackburn Rovers this Saturday as they look to push themselves back into the Championship's top two.
