Updated Injury News:

Cardiff City fear they could be without on-loan Manchester City defender Josh Wilson-Esbrand for the rest of the season.
Wilson-Esbrand is due to undergo a scan on a hamstring injury which forced him off during Saturday's 3-1 Championship home defeat by Hull City.

Cardiff travel to relegation-threatened Birmingham City on Wednesday night, where they could again be without Wales midfielder Rubin Colwill.

Their injury list also includes striker Kion Etete and midfielder Ryan Wintle, who both missed the Hull defeat, as did Republic of Ireland international Callum O'Dowda.

TEAM NEWS:

Wilson- Esbrand done for the season, grade 2 hammy, CO’D done for the season not risking him,

Cian Ashford will get a run out on Wednesday.

Etete out for the season

McGuinness back in training

The Opposition's Manager

Tony Mowbray was appointed Birmingham manager in January.

However, he is on medical leave until the end of the season with Gary Rowett in charge for the remainder of this campaign.

Rowett was previously in charge of the club between 2014 and 2016. He was sacked despite them being 7th in the Championship at the time. They ended up in a relegation battle that season - as they are this season after replacing John Eustace with Wayne Rooney.

He has also had spells in charge of Burton, Derby, Stoke and Millwall.

Opposition Dangerous Players

Jay Stansfield scored his 11th league goal of the season on Saturday.

Jordan James is highly rated and has eight league goals this season.

Head To Head

We have already played Birmingham twice this season.

We won at St Andrew’s in the Carabao Cup and they beat us at CCS in the league.

In the three meetings before this season, we won two and the other was a draw.

Team News - Predicted Line-Ups

Birmingham City: Ruddy, Laird, Aiwu, Sanderson, Buchanan, Paik, Sunjic, James, Miyoshi, Bacuna, Stansfield

Cardiff City: Horvath, Ng, Goutas, Phillips, Collins, Siopis, Ralls, Turnbull, Bowler, Grant, Meite

Last Game

We lost at home to Hull on Saturday.

On the same day, Birmingham lost at Leicester.

Birmingham City are in the bottom 3 after a disastrous run of only 1 Win & 7 defeats in their last 9 games

3 managers Birmingham have had this season, that does not help.

We beat Coventry away less than a week ago, who also have something to fight for.

Fact is we always play much better away. That’s been the case for a few years.

A Coventry team that as a good chance of top 6.... football results are not based on previous game if it was we wouldn't be where we are but bottom 3 probably.... you suspect city will win and will help our poor neighbours down Rd..

Optimistic 0-2 away win with a screamer.

I’d happily lose this and the Millwall game if it meant the jacks go down . Sadly I think they already have just enough points on the board and with Rotherham to play at home.

If we hadn’t rolled over to them and took the points they’d be deep in trouble.

I agree with another poster , I can see us losing , players on the beach exacerbated by uncertainty over manager .

Cardiff City fear they could be without on-loan

Manchester City defender Josh Wilson-Esbrand for the rest of the season.

Wilson-Esbrand is due to undergo a scan on a hamstring injury which forced him off during Saturday's 3-1 Championship home defeat by Hull City.
The 21-year-old had come on as a second-half substitute but lasted only 18 minutes before pulling up.
Wilson-Esbrand, who was on loan at French club Reims before switching to Cardiff in January, has made eight starts and three substitute appearances for the Bluebirds.

If the injury is significant - as Cardiff fear - then the England Under-21 international may miss the remaining five matches of the season.

Birmingham set to be without trio

Wednesday night's opponents Birmingham City are set to be without Marc Roberts, Oliver Burke and Lukas Jutkiewicz for their clash against Cardiff.

Stand-in boss Gary Rowett has been without the trio since he came back to the club and there are doubts over whether they'll play again this season.

"At the moment, the likes of Marc Roberts, Burkey, Jukey - they just have that real physicality that gives you something different in games - I think we probably miss them a little bit but it is what it is," he said after defeat to Leicester City at the weekend.

"We’re without that sort of player for maybe a few more games."

Rowett added: “Burkey is out injured at the moment and I don’t expect him to play that much of the season. Sometimes when you walk in it’s nice to see some players that you know, but the players that are available are the players who are going to get us results.”

Alfie Chang remains a long-term absentee.

Jordan James has understandably attracted a lot of interest from Premier League clubs, as well as some of the top teams on the continent.

The Wales international has impressed many this season, despite the shortcomings of many players, and other people at Birmingham City.

In a season that has been full of odd choices and confusing performances, he has been one of the few things that people can look at and be happy with when it comes to Birmingham.

His play this season has earned him a place in the top three for the Championship's Young Player of the Year award, alongside Leeds United's Archie Gray and Norwich City's Jonathan Rowe, and it's also attracted the interest of many top clubs. Italian side Atalanta were said to have made a €5 million bid for the 19-year-old in the January transfer window, and other teams like Fiorentina and Bologna are said to be interested in James.
Some suitors from the Premier League have also been named as those who want the midfielder, including Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Crystal Palace. Birmingham are said to value the teenager at £10 million, according to the Daily Mail.

As the Blues sink deeper and deeper into the relegation battle, their hands may be forced on James. Football pundit Carlton Palmer believes that this would be the case, if they were to be relegated.

Gary Rowett expects St Andrew's to rise to the occasion again this week at a time when Birmingham City need backing as much as ever. Blues welcome both Cardiff City and then Coventry City to B9 in what could prove to be an important home double header in the context of their season, and with the squad licking their wounds following more late away-day heartache last time out, at Leicester City.

For by no means the first time this season - nor under Rowett, in fact, in his impossibly short second stint back at the helm - Blues bowed to pressure at the death on Saturday, when being turned over by the promotion hunting Foxes. Failure to earn a result meant they slipped into the bottom three, with still five matches left to play. Three of those will be on home soil.

Blues, who had more than 3,000 in attendance at the King Power Stadium, rewarded a healthy St Andrew's turn-out on Easter Monday against Preston North End with a hard-fought 1-0 win courtesy of Jay Stansfield. Rowett would hope that all facets of the club - players, coaching staff and supporters - can replicate that afternoon on Wednesday (7.45pm kick-off) when Cardiff visit.

I expect Brum to win as they are in a relegation battle and their players have something to play for. Cardiff have nothing to play for and the majority of players couldn't give 2 fuks. Get the youngsters on the pitch and get rid of the dead wood I.e the majority of the first team.

Birmingham City

Gary Rowett’s side have picked up just three points from their last six fixtures, but he believes that this week is the opportunity to turn that around.

If they are going to make this week count, they’re going to have to do it without Lukas Jutkiewicz, Marc Roberts and Oliver Burke, none of whom will be fit for Wednesday evening.
