Cardiff Blues and our Stadium

Wed Oct 06, 2010 10:30 pm

I was very surprised by Carl's recent revelation that the Blues want out of their present deal with us and would like to return to The Arms Park.
Today's article in The Western Mule confirms my scepticism. According to that article a new Conference Centre/Hospitality facilities are planned to be built..and this will allow the Mill Stad to hold Champions League and other UEFA Cup Finals. This would provide big bucks for the WRU.

So if the Blues stop playing at our place ( and I would LOVE them to leave) where are they proposing to go, Carl?

Cardiff RFC still play at the Arms Park, but it's owned by Cardiff Athletic Club (CAC). CAC have always stated that they'll stay there forever. But I assumed, that over time, they'd be bought off or worn down by The Rugby Establishment who want the money and prestige associated with huge European Finals. You can't stage Champions' League Finals unless you have large hospitality areas close to the game. Cardiff RFC would be paid off and set up to play at Sophia Gardens. But the Blues,
surely (?) are stuck with us.....?

The Arms Park would be built on- for a Conference Centre. There have been lots of supportive business articles in the WM recently with " what Cardiff really needs is Conference facilities so the city can join the other city big-hitters" being the main message. But I don't know if CAC (Cardiff Athletic Club)have changed their minds about leaving. Any CAC members on this board? Also does anyone know (Carl?) if the Cardiff Blues have actually paid us any rent yet?

I like the Blues, I've had season tickets, watched them in Coventry and Twickenham, but only once at CCS and it was horrible. From then on I vowed I wont watch them again until they are back at arms park. IF they never move back then so be it.

I've no dubt that the Arms park will be pulled down, but suprised to see the Swalec being mentioned.

I mean if the eggers can wreck a footy pitch they are hardly ging to be good for the CRICKET pitch. Bang goes Glams chance of any more tests if the Blues go in there.

Why dont they just upgrade the leckwith Athletics stadium to 10k, then the Blues and Cardiff RFC can play the majority of their games there and move to CCS or the Millstad for the 2-3 big games each year ?

I'm looking forward to the cricket conspiracy theories now... bloody eggers waited for us to develop our ground , we've got all the debt, now the cuckoos are moving in. Bloody Welsh mafia, etc..... ;) peter Thomas will be kicking us out soon and the Blues will have their flags and name everywhere. We are finished..

Don't think having rugby at the Swalec would be the end of the world.

It's very common for rugby and crickets clubs to play at the same stadium in New Zealand and it works well.

Hopefully it will come to fruition and we won't have to share our ground.

Yes, that's the plan and it always has been.... but getting WAG (and us tax payers) to foot the bill to feather this particular
WRU nest will be interesting in a time of cut backs.
