LEEDS UTD 'FAN' BANNED FOR EMILIANO SALA 'PLANE' GESTURE

A Leeds United fan has been banned from football after making insulting gestures in reference to the death of striker Emiliano Sala.

The Cardiff City player was killed when his plane crashed into the English Channel on 21 January 2019.

Harry Keyes, 22, of Huddersfield Road, Mirfield, was arrested at Leeds United's match against Cardiff City at Elland Road on August 6.

He was given a three-year football banning order by Leeds magistrates.

Keyes had pleaded guilty to a Section 5 public order offence of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour to cause harassment, alarm or distress.

'Highly offensive'

He was arrested after he was seen making aeroplane gestures at the match, West Yorkshire Police said.

Ch Insp Pete Hall, who led the policing operation at the game, said: "Directing chants, comments or gestures that refer to tragic incidents at rival fans is highly offensive and can cause genuine distress to those affected by those incidents.

"It has absolutely no place in football, and people going to games should be in no doubt about how seriously the authorities and the clubs will treat any such incidents
."

Keyes was also fined £107 and ordered to pay £85 prosecution costs and a £43 victim surcharge.

The correct punishment and good to see.

There will always be singing between opposition fans and banter, but a line has to be drawn.

There’s no place for tragedy chanting/gestures. We’ve seen them increase lately with Man Utd and Liverpool fans singing about Hillsborough and Munich respectively when they play each other. There are other examples too.

Those who do this sort of thing should rightly get a banning order.

Sorry, I have to say that even though the Sala airplane gesture was obnoxious aren't we crossing a line here in making such things criminal. Why were the police involve ffs. The offender could have been banned from the club and that is fair enough but criminalising such behaviour leaves it open for the government to have total control over us. If he were inciting opposition fans, then police involvement may have been necessary because that could have led to violence and injury. But the police spokesman said that they were concerned that: "Directing chants, comments or gestures that refer to tragic incidents at rival fans is highly offensive and can cause genuine distress to those affected by those incidents. In my view, being offensive should not attract criminal charges: many comedians would agree.

If he’d gone to prison, I’d agree with you. It’s not a custodial offence.

But a football banning order is right. It means he can’t go to any game. Don’t know about you, but don’t think people like that should be at football games.

So glad you agree that such behaviour should not attract a custodial offence but I would argue that it should not attract any criminal charge. I think you may be being a little harsh on the man really. I would need to know much more about the incident before passing judgement. Have you ever been drunk and said or done something wrong? This man may have been drunk for all I know. But much depends on the length of the ban really. If it's a life ban then that would be ridiculous but a ban for the rest of the season may be fair.

He deserves a criminal record for this plus the ban in exactly the same way the cowardly scum who mocked Bradley Lowery received. The latter's brief tried to blame his behaviour on being drunk, which was just the usual cheap excuse to mitigate his guilt, he and his brother knew exactly what they were doing, as did this clown. He's a grown man of 22 so hopefully this will make him act his age. These incidents are very isolated and are always condemned by football fans, most of which enjoy a partisan atmosphere and decent banter. Mocking a tragedy to goad others is just simply cowardly, a low thing to do and done by melting thickos.

If you want to know more about the incident so you can pass judgment , you can message him on Facebook and ask him about it, as he's that thick he's left his socials up despite him making the national media. Here's the link:

Sorry mate but ‘being drunk’ can’t be used to support his case.
