“ Is the gap bigger than ever? “

Sun Dec 10, 2023 10:24 pm

Below is the Premier League table with nearly half the season gone.

All three promoted teams currently sit in the bottom three.

Play-Off winners Luton are the closest to safety, they are four points off Everton. But that’s because Everton had ten points deducted. Without that, they’d be five points from safety.

Last season, none of the promoted teams got relegated.

So is the gap between the Premier League and the Championship bigger than ever?

Or was last season just one of the weakest Championship seasons?

It certainly seems to be, Ned...

It can't be mere coincidence that the three bottom clubs were the Championship's best three (allowing for play-off luck) last season...

The finances (club costs, transfers and wages) are surreal and well out of the reach of most below the top level...

We will, of course, see the odd Premier League 'survivor' but even spending 'big' money is no guarantee...

Just look at how Fulham (£100m+) 'threw' money at their team only to be relgated...

And last season Nottingham Forest effectively changed their whole team and were very lucky to survive to fight again only to struggle again this season...

If/when we get there again, it's going to be a tougher gig than before and only 'real investment' will give us a tilt at survival and a gradual climb uo that league...

Hmmm.! ;) :ayatollah:

I always think it’s advantageous to go up and down a couple of times to gather lots of coin into the coffers so that on your second or third visit you’ll be in a better financial position to get better players to hopefully secure your status on a more permanent basis.

Along with the money Brighton have made over the last few seasons - with the players sold .

no, i wouldn't say so, in either case.

Sheffield United owner agreed the sale of two of their key players before the season started. and didn't spend to really strengthen,

Luton i think have only Spent around £10m/£15m, and they've bought players ready for when they go down

Burnley on the other hand have spent around £100m, and have been very poor, but you always get one team thats poor. Forest looked pretty poor last season and i believe they spent a few £m in Jan and stayed up

I wouldn’t be surprised if the three teams that got relegated last season get promoted unless Ipswich can continue their good form? It is certainly a stronger Championship this season and with the 3 promoted teams looking as though they will come back down, next season is the year for us to get promoted? We are certainly a bigger team than Luton,Burnley and Sheffield United, but not yet up to Leicester,Leeds or Southampton!

Brighton are up to their eyes in debt. 4th biggest in PL. That aside there's now an increasing imbalance in the Championship..
