Massive progress this season

Sun Dec 10, 2023 12:59 pm

I was looking at the final league table for last season and we only stayed up with a total of 49 points which was an average of 1.06 points per game, lets face it we should have been relegated.
We are now at the 20 game mark and have accumulated a total of 30 points at an average of 1.5 points per match. a projection for the rest of the season at that rate would give us 69 points which would be borderline for a top 6 place. The key factor is that with our returning star players Rambo & O'Dowda plus hopefully the likes of 3 new players coming in (Kieffer one of them) wwe can up our game which will catapult us into the top 6 and push our points total into the mid seventies. It really is there for the taking :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

I think a lot will depend on how quickly our returning players can get back up to speed and how long it will take our new recruits to settle into the team. I know this is stating the bleedin' obvious but it is a very valid point when trying to project our likely finishing position in the league.

Spot on.

People need to remember when we were last season.

Let’s be honest, none of us expected us to be as high as 7th going into the Christmas period.

This year is probably one of the toughest the championship has been for a long time

Someone says that every year, just like someone else always says it's the weakest it's been for years. I've seen both said on here in the last week.

We look a team this season, yeah we have some shitty halfs in some games, also think Bulut is learning and improving too as we seen in the Milwall game with early subs

I think that's the way to see it: Massive Progress. But perhaps the most progress we have made as a club was off the field in appointing a decent manager. I don't know why we have not done so for a long time but it's good that Bulut is now in charge. I have to say that I'm impressed with much about this man, including his honesty, his knowledge of the game, his man management and his media management. I also suspect that his 'managing up' skills are fairly good. But I don't think we should get carried away and be disappointed if we don't make the playoffs. We have to think more long term and Bulut's appointment suggests that the club is beginning to think that way also.

Personally, I am feeling generally optimistic for the long term now we have Bulut as manager and the transfer embargo has been lifted.
We have been converted from a poor team, over recent seasons, to a very capable team at this level. Nevertheless, I feel we have some way to go before I'd consider us a good team.
We've had a similar amount of poor performances as good performances, but seem to be more capable at grinding out results when not playing well at times. Saturday was a good example of this.
But considering the manager has had to make do with free transfer and loan players to date, a big part of our healthy league position comes as a result of his team organisation.
My optimism comes from the fact he can compete with the other clubs to bring in more quality from now on. Hopefully, Mr Tan and the board will support him financially to do this.
As long as the club can stay at least in the top half, I think we must be patient with the manager and give him time to mould together a team that can once again seriously challenge for promotion. Yes, he will make the odd mistake and of course he's still learning the British game but we are certainly going in the right direction.

Without doubt Erol Bulut has done very well so far. I say that because I don't think our squad is a lot better than last seasons lot. Where it is better is in the defence department but there is little if not none difference in midfield or attack. I would say last seasons attack might have the edge on this seasons forward line. The real difference is the management of the squad and that is all down to Erol.
