Cardiff City are Swansea City are both interested in signing Brighton youngster Marc Leonard in the January transfer window, according to reports.

The 21-year-old Scotland youth international has impressed at League One Northampton Town, where he has been on loan last season and this season. He has been awarded seven man of the match gongs in 21 appearances this term and it appears he is readying himself for a crack at the Championship.

Football Insider state that south Wales rivals Cardiff and Swansea are both keen on a loan swoop in the new year. Leonard helped the Cobblers earn promotion from League Two last season, having featured heavily in their midfield, and appears to have picked up where he left off in the third tie.

Leonard, who moved to Brighton from Edinburgh club Hearts in 2018, is thought to be a versatile midfielder who can play in both deep and more advanced positions.

Bluebirds boss Erol Bulut is already on record as saying he wants four new players in the new year and it is understood that midfield is an area he has been keen to address since arriving at the club. However, with other positions having to take priority last summer, he knew that assignment might have to wait until later windows.

Leonard has two appearances for Brighton both in the League Cup.

Current midfielders Andy Rinomhota, Romaine Sawyers and maybe even Ebou Adams could leave Cardiff in January.

As for the Swans, boss Michael Duff has already admitted he needs to strengthen in the winter window, despite bringing in more than a dozen players in the off-season.
