' Jack Leahy was one Cardiff's brightest prospects '

Mon Jun 12, 2023 7:41 am

Jack Leahy has penned a farewell to Cardiff City after it was announced he would leave the club this summer.

Leahy who is 21 years old later this year was sent out on loan to Welsh League Club Haverfordwest and returned this month to be told by U21 manager Darren Purse that his contract wont be renewed.

Leahy made the step up to the first team under Steve Morison last pre-season, but struggled for involvement once the season started.

He was one of the more dependable players for the under-21s and stood out and also scored a winner against Swansea City in the mini-derby before being loaned out to Haverfordwest County for the second half of the season.

Many at the club were shocked by Leah's deparute as he was one of City's brightest prospects.

Jack Leahy:

"My time at Cardiff has come to a end," he wrote on social media. "I would like to thank everyone at the club over the past two years for making my time there amazing, I wish everyone there the best for the future."

Massively surprised by this. I watched the development alot and found him to be the stand out performer on most matches.
Found pockets of space with ease. Created chances and scored.

Strange.

Purse does not know what he is doing time for him to go :banghead:

I find it very strange as Leahy was one of our better U21’s.

Purse to me is clueless.

I watched Leahy about 15 times really was a good player for our U21’s.

You only have to see what he offered Lennon Peake a year on loan at Pontypridd United

No wonder the kid left.

Sent Leahy out to Haverfordwest on loan then releases him??

Exactly Roger,

Purse did awful last season and the season before :banghead: :banghead:

But the Hierarchy apparently love him and Glen Williams Media Wales keeps praising him.

Who has he put in our first team in the last 18months?

Annis who was it that appointed him, was it not one of his old mates who was manager at the time.

Honestly Annis the contradiction from you is insane. One might think you have an agenda! On the one hand purse isn't good enough and none of our players are coming through, on the other they are wrong for letting Jack and Lennon go :banghead:

Honestly you seem to be contradicting yourself, purse is not good enough and that is why none of our players are coming through, and just how is it contradicting, by saying Purse is letting jack and Lennon go??? please explain and I really cannot see your reasoning or understanding it

To put the reasoning behind players not coming through at purses door completely is part of the issue, and I'm not really sure why you jumped in on annis behalf he can speak for himself

Moan about the youngsters not being good enough, or moan about them being released but how can you have it both ways. Some people just like negativity I'm sure. Purses u21 actually did OK last season. But that doesn't fit here

Surely it is purse that decides who goes and stays regardless not the board, this is the under 21's we are talking about not the first team.
And I am not stcking up for Annis you made a statement that I disagee with, or am I not allowed to do that?

The sole purpose of the u21s is to prepare players who break into the first team. Not developing players and/or releasing them aren't contradictions; it's two metrics of its failure.

Must admit I found it strange that he was predominantly starting on the bench at Haverfordwest…

On the flip side Tom Davies went to Pontypridd and did well. Id go so far as to say that we can use the Welsh premier to our advantage, but maybe only with short term loans.

I'm not a big fan of U21 fooitball as a vehicle for producing players. If they are good prospects a loan to a L1/2 or the conference will give them the right experience and be far more competitive than the U21's.

Paulh,

Where is the contradiction??

I don’t rate Purse.

I don’t rate the Welsh League

And I think our players should go out on loan to clubs higher than Non League.

Yes I thought Leahy and Peake should of gone out to higher level clubs.

My views.

Roger,

Don’t worry he always does , Paulh deliberately wants to say the opposite to me even if he does not think it.

He has contradicted himself.

I recall us being allowed to play our B team in the Welsh League back in the day.

Then we could not afford to raise a B team so had to leave it. When we finally got ourselves sorted the EFL would not allow us to return to the Welsh League if we wanted to stay in the English pyramid. Personally I felt that was petty from the EFL.
