Anti-Social Behavior in Football

Thu Apr 20, 2023 4:13 pm

I was asked to go on Radio Wales this morning to give my perspective on anti-social behavior in football. I stated that I had never felt threatened whenever I have been to a game in the CCS whether it be Cardiff City or Wales. It is my opinion that we as City fans are well behaved and threatening behavior is not common place at the CCS. I know that has not always been the case in the dark ages of football in the 1980s etc. Anti-social behavior on local parks football is a real issue especially with parents at junior games.

It is my opinion that Players, managers in the professional game should show a much better example to everyone else and the Fulham experience of a couple of weeks back leaves a lot to be desired and indeed so too the Swansea v Preston match last night. As a former referee I have been abused by the best of them however without respect to officials, opposition and indeed other fans w will all be on a slippery slope.

An interesting subject for all to digest. :bluescarf:

I found as I climbed the refereeing pyramid, that the aggression is worse the higher you go. HOWEVER, the higher you go, the quicker that aggression gets dispersed and plauers get on with the game.

At parks level, the aggression takes a lot longer to calm down and involves more individuals who want to have 'their say'.

Ive never been intimidated on the pitch... threatened maybe just the once in 15 years. I made it a rule though only to referee adult games. I never reffed kids games as the parents were always a nightmare.

When I played we always respected the ref, even if he was hopeless. The bad behaviour is societal, for a number of reasons.
No parents were there on a saturday morning in the 70s, it was a break for both. Also, we'd get a wallop if out of line, and that generally did the trick.

Butetown were always poorly behaved, and took the piss really against oppo players and refs.

My 14 yr old lad was reffing an under10s game…game an indirect free kick …one coach said it was direct one said indirect…one parent threatened to punch my lad for just giving the free kick .
I reported it to the local FA along with 2 other parents but nothing was done …my lad never did another game ..

Park football will eventually die cos of theee being no refs ..
Body cams and long bans are the only way
