Sounds like we were that crap we deserved to lose, Heaton kept us in it.
Safe to say the midfield isn't working at the moment. We need something changed up. I'd go for a draw against Barnsley to be honest the way we're playing at the moment. Play 5 at the back or something.

What formation were we playing in midfield tonight ? I really don't hope it was 4-4-2 !
Tue Sep 28, 2010 8:45 pm
Bellamy will be back at the weekend. He'll take Keogh's place, and we should go back to 4-5-1. It worked superbly against Doncaster !
Tue Sep 28, 2010 8:45 pm
I think we're setting out to defensively to be honest. I know we're missing players, but we need to be winning games like this even when not at full strength. I know we've injuries, and anyone would struggle with who we've been missing, but Palace have been shit and we should be doing them.
On the plus side we got another clean sheet and more match practice into Koumas and Jay. Seyi is back too and hopefully he'll be upto speed for Barnsley.
22007 ain't bad either.
Tue Sep 28, 2010 8:47 pm
Drinkwaters is obviously the kink in midfield that we are missing. He and Oli formed a awesome partnership in the middle, and as soon as we lose it we start going shit.
Keogh and Bothroyd simply don't work, the faster that Chopra comes back the better.

Does anyone know exactly what formation we played tonight ?
I hope it was:
Heaton
McNaughton---Hudson---Blake----Naylor
------------Olofinjana----Whittingham--
Burke-----------Koumas---------Keogh---
---------------Bothroyd--------------------
On Saturday, if Bellamy is back, and it seems he will be, we should replace Keogh with Bellamy.
Tue Sep 28, 2010 8:51 pm
I'd love to see us really go for it and go 433 all out.
Bellamy, Burke and Jay up top against Barnsley.

Like it was against Doncaster. Then stick Koumas, Whittingam and Olofinjana in the middle and we should be OK.

Whittingham shouldn't be a defensive midfielder, I think it was just Seyi in that position.
I'm sure we were playing 4-4-2 for a long period of that match.

From the radio guys it sounded like this:
McNaughton---Hudson---Blake----Naylor
------------ Olofinjana------
Burke----------Whittingham----------Koumas---
-----------Bothroyd--------Keogh------------
The midfield three of burke whitts and Kou were constantly interchanging like some sort of Ajax of the 70s.
...but obviously not as good.

I'll drink to that!
Whitts seemed too deep for much of tonight.

Burke and Whitts are off the boil big time.
Koumas never got above a simmer.

Sorry, I shouldn't have put Whitts that deep !
Against Donny and Hull, he was sort of roaming around, looking for the ball, getting on the ball and switching play well. Like a playmaker, a free role. We need to get him back to that. Koumas should be stuck in behind Jay, as we know that he's crap out wide.
Anyway, if that was indeed the formation we were playing with tonight, then we were never going to trouble Palace. Whitts should've been left, with Koumas just ahead of Olofinjana.
Tue Sep 28, 2010 9:02 pm
...on the bright side Reading got a late winner against the tractor boys.
Tue Sep 28, 2010 9:04 pm
Yep - we're still 2nd. As long as we stay there going into the international break, then I'll take it knowing that we'll have all our key players back and ready to go against Bristol.
Tue Sep 28, 2010 9:05 pm
here's the table for anyone who's interested. Horribly close, from our point of view:
1 QPR 23
2 Cardiff 17
3 Norwich 16
4 Watford 15
5 Burnley 15
6 Reading 15
7 Ipswich 15
8 Swansea 15
9 Coventry 14
10 Leeds 14
Tue Sep 28, 2010 9:40 pm
...apparently some trouble at QPR
Tue Sep 28, 2010 9:46 pm
lol, read this:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/footbal ... 031705.stm"The home fans had hoped for more after seeing the influential Seyi Olofinjana back in midfield after injury, with Jason Koumas also stepping in to
supposedly add more attacking flair."
Sums it up for poor old Koumas really eh lads?

Still no plan B.
For anyone at the game - how close were Keogh and Jay playing together?

Jay was up front alone with Keogh playing wide left, Burke wide right,Whitts and Koumas in the middle and Oli protecting the back 4 behind them. That's how it looked set up to me though there was a fair amount of swapping around going on. It deffo didn't look like a 4-4-2 tonight but too many players especially Koumas way below their best. A traffic cone would have done as good a job as Jase tonight.

Burke playing without confidence and cocking up, Whitts usual passing radar was way off beam. Keogh's a trier but achieves nothing, Jay had one of his in a strop nights and picked up a really stupid booking, Oli calm but not at his best. Great saves from Heaton and good showings from Darcy, Huds and Kev. Naylor was absolute crap again 1st half.

So we were basically playing a 4 5 1 against the worst team in the league (one of at least) . I dunno, makes no sense to me...
