I dont think a lot of people realise how big attendances are these days, though I think the figures for most clubs outside the Premier are inflated by non show cheap season ticket holders. Only people who sat down tended to have season tickets in those days. However the figure in 75/76 for us cant be right unless its only for part of the season. I am sure that was the season we had 35K for Hereford and 23K for Swindon.

But a lot of the other games especially at the start of the season were probably pretty low. The Hereford game was an anomaly that year. Most of the big crowds around that time were for the FA cup games if I remember rightly. :old: :old: :old:

The FA Cup run was the following year when we played Spurs, Wrexham and Everton.

The 75/76 season was the season we went up and though the crowds earlier in the season weren't great because we didn't start too well, they weren't that bad. We had some big crowds - in the high teens - over Christmas and New Year against Peterboro and Brighton (it was on MOD) and i doubt if we fell below 10k after that. So with the last two matches against Hereford and Swindon attracting nearly 60K I can't see how we had an average of just £8K. Must have been at least 12K i would have thought.

We had great away crowds as well at the end at Palace and Bury. I seem to recall we took about 60 buses to Palace. How can i remember all this so clearly but cant remember much about last season! :old:

That was the game that was on MOD- Adrian Alston almost scored straight from the kick off! Tony Evans knocked it forward and Alston seeing the keeper of his line tried his luck but the ball went past the post. Would have been the quickest goal in football league history.

Been bugging me the figure given for us as i thought it must have been a few thousand more than that given of 8,000.It was actually 11,696 which is over 3,500 more.

Maybe it is for all games and would include Welsh cup Just a guess

Possibly, though I think its more likely that the figures are after part of the season. If so ours would have increased dramatically at the end because our last two games averaged nearly 30,000!!

It doesn't detract from the overall picture though as some of the teams attendances shown in the table would have gone down.

That was one of my favourite seasons. Great attacking football, some great wins, promotion on the last day of the season and the iconic kit of yellow and white band on a blue shirt introduced.

Your right 8128 was the average after 10 games which I think coincided with xmas. Best season anyway even if we're all remembering it through rose tinted glasses. Did my first away that year Southend in the cup and the last 3 away's will never by forgotten. Especially right now having just got back from a disappointing trip to Norwich.

If i didn't think we would struggle to get back up and the financial implications of going down, i wouldn't mind a season or two in the "3rd Division". New grounds to go to, some quite close. The first two times I experienced us going down we bounced straight back up again. But then i remember how long it took to get back the last time- 18 years? - and realise I cant wait that long. :old:

This was also my first game too. Even though we lost I totally enjoyed the whole experience and nagged my old man to take me to every game afterwards.
Got to be honest though, I've always thought it was 10th January
