Before last night, @CardiffCityFC had not won back-to-back games since early October. How did Lamouchi set the team up to beat @ReadingFC and has he found a winning formula for the rest of the season?
Although it took a late Sawyers goal to separate the two sides, Cardiff were comfortable and dominant throughout. Beat Reading in xG (1.18-0.35), possession (63%), shots (19-5), shots on target (5-0) and hit woodwork twice! So how has Sabri got the team creating chances?
City started in a 3412 shape with O'Dowda and Philogene as the wide men. COD managed 7 crosses in 66 mins and Philogene managed another 8. Only 3 of these 15 were successful, but the fact they could receive in space, beat a man and get ball into box (x15) is key.
Building from the back: McG and Kipre 2v2 with Royals strikers. Wintle and Sawyers offer options but not the intended target - they occupy opposition midfield so there is a 5v4 further up the pitch courtesy of City's wide men. Look where COD receives the ball (Kipre long pass)
When wide man receives the ball, there could be 3 or 4 players in/around box: Etete, Kaba, Robbo and opposite winger. With time, crossing accuracy should improve and attacker positioning and movement become less predictable. This pattern could be a real source of goals.
Great example of the strikers working together to create a chance through movement. Kaba creates the space, Kipre makes the pass (again) and Etete gets the shot away. Etete in particular looks great (and much improved) at running channels and holding the ball. #modernno9s
Where does topscorer Callum Robinson fit into this system? The best place he can be: in space.
His heat map shows he received the ball mainly on edge of the box or in wide midfield positions where he could progress the play. Unlucky not to get a goal yday after hitting the bar.
No review of Lamouchiball is complete without talking about ever-present Romaine Sawyers. From a deeper position, Sawyers can literally boss the game with his positioning and pass selection. Like playing one Ryan Wintle next to another slightly swaggier Wintle who can score.
What next? COD and Robinson are key cogs in Lamouchi's machine and he will hope they are both available for selection after their injuries last night. Could Ojo manage 90 mins (inc defensive work) vs Norwich? Could Colwill/Davies do Robinson's job as a roaming 10? Time will tell.
With wing-backs and two strikers, Lamouchi seems to have found a system that gets results. After going toe-to-toe with Carrick in 2nd half and wins v Bham and Reading, Sabri has shown he knows what must be done to get results. It is up to the players, fitness pending, to do it!
