Roy Keane: I didn't see Whitehead as a manager

Someone who knows the Bluebirds interim boss better than most is former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane.

The Irishman made Dean Whitehead his captain while at Sunderland and waxed lyrical about his qualities as a player and his character during his playing days.

And, when asked about Whitehead on ITV following the manager's pre-Leeds interview with Gabriel Clarke, Keane said: "He seemed a bit nervous there.

"The manager who brought him in has obviously just lost his job. But Deano did brilliantly for me as a player at Sunderland. Steady, turned up every week, was always fit, a good lad, but was a quiet lad. We judge him on his performances.

"His interview there, he didn't rule out taking the job. But to be fair, he's just got to focus on the game coming up tonight.

"But I didn't see him ever as a manager, but he's obviously gone into coaching and you just never know."

Speaking about the game, Keane said: "Tough night. We have seen the difference in quality. They kept going at the end, considering they've not scored all season. It gives them something to take away for the manager and the coaching staff.

"A tough night for them and they need to get a manager in there, quickly."
