BREAKING NEW INTERIM CARDIFF CITY MANAGER SPEAKS:

Tue Jan 17, 2023 1:17 pm

Its January and City's 3rd manager this season?

New Interim Cardiff City Manager Dean Whitehead's first words:

Leeds away:

"It'll be a good opportunity again on the back of a good performance at home, , We had against Wigan."
hopefully we can produce the same again but get the win."

"They are all ready. Everybody is fit and healthy. We have a fully fit squad."

Dean Whitehead wants his Cardiff City players to put in a performance for the travelling away fans at Leeds United in the FA Cup third round replay amid a tumultuous week at the club.

Whitehead expects to be in charge for Saturdays home game with Millwall.

Mark Hudson was sacked as Bluebirds boss on Saturday night, with his assistant Whitehead taking the reins while the club look for a permanent solution.

In truth, Cardiff could do without this midweek tie against the Premier League club, but Sonny Perkins' stoppage time equaliser at Cardiff City Stadium just over a week ago forced this game into a rematch in Yorkshire.

Speaking for the first time as Cardiff boss in an in-house interview, Whitehead said of the clash, which will see 700 Bluebirds supporters travel up to Elland Road:

“The boys are ready. Everybody is fit. We are looking forward to it. It's a good game for us.

DEAN WHITEHEAD:

"The atmosphere is going to be really good. We will have travelling supporters so we have got to put in a performance for them.

"It's an amazing amount of people who are going to come and support us on a Wednesday night, away at Leeds, we have to wear the shirt with pride and put on a performance for them."

While the manager situation is likely to move at a pace this week, Whitehead still has one eye on the home Championship fixture with Millwall at the weekend, too.

DEAN WHITEHEAD:

"It'll be a good opportunity again on the back of a good performance at home, , We had against Wigan."
hopefully we can produce the same again but get the win."

"We had players who stepped up for their chance and we have players who are going to do that again. They have got to take their opportunity and everyone has to step up and be counted. We look forward to it," he added.

"You gain confidence all the time in matches, but that was a big turning point for one or two players who came in, performed and stayed in the team.

"Now it's up to everyone to up their standards and we will go to Elland Road and then Millwall at the weekend.

"Any opportunity for any player who hasn't had the minutes they would have liked, this gives them a chance to put on the shirt and put in a performance. It puts people in contention.

"They are all ready. Everybody is fit and healthy. We have a fully fit squad."

JOE RALLS:

Cardiff captain Joe Ralls also spoke to the club's media team and hopes some of the younger players can be afforded an opportunity again and grab it with both hands while live on ITV on Wednesday night.

"It's a good occasion for a lot of the boys who haven't played at Elland Road before, I'm sure it'll be packed out like it normally is and will be a good atmosphere and good experience for everyone.

"When I was younger and coming through you get your minutes in the cup and it's a great opportunity for the lads to show what they can do.

"A lot of the boys showed in that game against Leeds did themselves no harm. Had a great game and put in a good performance. It will be good for their experience going forward to play in front of that atmosphere. We were disappointed with the late goal but proud of the performance the boys put in.

"It's hard getting into the league side when you are trying to achieve something, the manager might be a little reluctant to put you in. But the cups give you a chance to show what you can do.

"For me, being involved in the cups when I was younger was a great chance to come in and show what I could do. The shoe is on the other foot now and some of our boys are coming in and it's great to see."

Cardiff take on Leeds at Elland Road on Wednesday, January 18. Kick-off is at 7.45pm.

Who has decided on his appointment?

Another change behind the scenes at Cardiff City

There has already been a casualty on the coaching staff in 2023.

Earlier this month, head of physical performance PJ Wilson left, WalesOnline understands. Wilson, who had a background in rugby, was brought in last summer under Steve Morison, but has exited just seven months later.

His departure came before the sacking of Mark Hudson at the weekend.

Cardiff have brought in someone to fill Wilson's role, though. Jonny Northeast cut his teeth at Swansea City, where he spent seven years and became the club's head of sports science and fitness. He also held a sports science role with Wales' under-19s team until 2018.

He then moved to the States and joined DC United, where he became the performance director for the MLS side.

Northeast then came back to the UK in 2020 and linked up with Valerien Ismael at Barnsley, before moving with him to West Brom and, last year, Besiktas, where Dean Whitehead coached.

Darrell Clarke rules himself out of Port Vale move

Darrell Clarke features as the seventh favourite to take over at Cardiff, priced at 20/1.

The Port Vale manager, however, has apparently ruled out a move from the Potteries, claiming he is "loyal" to the club after signing a long term contract.

He has been linked with the vacant managerial post at Portsmouth, but when asked about the Pompey talk, he told BBC Radio Stoke: "For me I love my job here, I get up every morning to try and make this football better.

"I don’t look and listen to stuff like that, for me it’s focusing on making this group better all the time and making this club better – and that’s what I will continue to do.

"Of course I am (ruling myself out), I’m really happy here, I signed a long-term deal in the summer, I’m loyal.

"People that know me over the years know I’m loyal, and all I do is wake up thinking how can we get better."

Everybody is fit eh?

Look forward to seeing Ebou Adams in his first start then and Jamilu Collins must have made a miraculous recovery to be back so soon.

Hopefully Colwill won't chip a fingernail in the warm up and be out for a few more months.

McGuiness should be back also - where on earth was he on Saturday?

Sitting at home with a nice cup of tea and a hobnob watching Soccer Saturday?

Every League 1, League 2 and conference manager will be linked with the job but really it's only those whose teams are near the bottom of their respective divisions who are in with a shout.

Ultimately however the job is far more likely to go to a manager currently unemployed so no compensation needs to be paid.

Bl88dy hell. Delusional. If he thinks that's a good performance then we really ARE in the sh*t.

I think I'll nip down to Corals and put a fiver on Tan.

Would be great seeing his name in the list of possible managers!
