Dean Whitehead, Cardiff City's new caretaker manager
Dean Whitehead will be the man taking charge of Cardiff City's FA Cup third-round replay against Leeds United on Wednesday night.
The board gave Mark Hudson the green light to bring his own man on to the coaching staff back in November and ex-midfielder Whitehead was top of the list.
Now Hudson has been sacked after a run of nine games without a win and less than three months in the job, eyes are turning towards who will be appointed next.
Well, the last two managers, Hudson and Steve Morison, were internal appointments on a temporary basis and eventually were given the reins full time.
That may well be why the bookmakers have Whitehead second favourite to take the job permanently, behind only Neil Warnock. But who is the man we have seen and heard so little of?
Whitehead, a former midfielder, made his name in the game with Sunderland, Stoke City, Middlesbrough and Huddersfield Town before he retired in 2018.
The 41-year-old then moved into coaching and took up a role at Huddersfield Town, where he grew close to Hudson, as part of David Wagner's technical staff and became No2 under under Mark Hudson when he was caretaker manager for three games, losing all three games including against the Bluebirds.
In 2019, Whitehead made the move to League One side Shrewsbury Town as a member of the coaching staff, joining former Wales international Sam Ricketts' backroom team as first-team coach. The following year, he was promoted to assistant manager following some casualties on the coaching staff.
Whitehead and Ricketts were relieved of their duties in November 2020 with the club sitting 23rd in League One, having accrued just nine points from a possible 39.
The ex-midfielder then joined Port Vale in League Two in July 2021, with David Flitcroft, the sporting director, having overhauled the setup there. Whitehead coached under Darrell Clarke, incidentally another person not too low down on the bookies' odds list, and helped them win promotion to League One last season.
He jumped ship to join Adam Murray and Valerien Ismael at Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas last July, but was relieved of his duties just months later after the Frenchman was given the boot.
That paved the way for him to join the Bluebirds, with then Cardiff boss Hudson at the time saying: "He's a good coach, Dean Whitehead, someone I've worked with before.
Will a third caretaker boss be given the keys full time at Cardiff?
All will become clearer this week, one suspects.
