League 1 Club makes a bid for City player?

Tue Jan 10, 2023 2:41 pm

Hmm, rumblings on the local Wednesday drums, " Sheffield Wednesday have made an offer for Cardiff City's Mark McGuiness,

A few of my close friends who support the Owls have said the same thing....

McGuinness, 22, v Premiership Club Newcastle United made a whopping 15 clearances and four blocks in a superb defensive showing against multi-million pound Toon attackers. In the build-up to the clash it emerged Cardiff were set to exercise their recall option after Saturday's tie.

That’s interesting indeed. If it comes, I wonder what the offer will be. I’m guessing £400k.

£1.5 with add ons?

A player who could go for a much higher fee in a year or two.

I'd bring him back, give him half a season at this level and see how he does. However, this embargo makes that difficult.

I wouldn't like to see us sell him, either way and would prefer that he stays at Sheff Wed on loan until the end of the season if we can't register him.

And Arsenal will get a percentage of any fee.

First bid from them I meant. We shouldn’t accept but as we’ve sent him out for the season it’s difficult to gauge a fair fee to accept; around £1.2m ?

I can see no reason at all why it would benefit us to sell him now unless the club is so desperate to get in any money they can at this time.

I'd hate this to be another Ramsey situation where we virtually give him away in order to get some pennies into the club. (I know he's different from Ramsey before anyone points that out!)

Of course if Wednesday or anyone else offers crazy money then you can't turn it down but any talk about £1m or thereabouts should be discounted immediately.

The answer must surely be that unless somebody offers say £5m or more (very unlikely I know) we should just leave him on loan at Wednesday until the end of the season and then bring him back.

If we're still in the Championship he can continue his education here and if we get relegated then would be the time to look for offers, not now FFS!

I hear what you’re saying mate but this is a player who many fans (myself included) criticised him for a number of mistakes. I’m so pleased that it’s possible that I’ve been proved wrong as it’ll be a win / win situation for us. Sell for a tidy fee or keep. Just remember that his great performances Jane been in league one too.

Swap for one of their strikers.

If Romeo's injury wasn't as first feared, would you play Mc Guiness instead of NG at centre half ?

If we are willing to sell I can see others joining in.

As he'll be fashionable at the moment £3 million with sell on wouldn't be out of the question.

This would be extremely short sighted by the club. Personally, i think Mcguinnes could quite easily go on to have a career like Morrison and is a future captain for whoever he plays for. Bring him back and shift NG onto to the right. If he's not going to be a regular starter, leave him with Wednesday for the season. Arsenal take a cut of a potential transfer so selling him cheap now would be stupid.

This would be an excellent move for him.
