Signing players when under embargo, Yes we can !

Thu Jan 05, 2023 3:57 pm

There's been a lot of confusion on this board saying we can't sign any players on loan and cant pay there wages but we can here is an extract for an article .

Under the terms of the embargo, clubs are permitted to 'staff up' to ensure they have a squad of 23 senior players. The idea is to preserve the integrity of the competition and means a club under embargo can still sign players provided they don't breach that 23-man threshold.

For what it's worth, Cardiff's squad list, according to the EFL, currently stands at 22, meaning they would still be allowed to sign another player when the window opens.

There are, of course, some caveats here. Any arrival will have to be a player currently not registered to another club or on loan. In the case of the latter, there can't be any sort of fee involved, and Cardiff would not be permitted to pay additional wages on top of the player's salary at their parent club. Those two conditions alone could rule them out of the running for some of the loan market's most prized assets.

Tan could also sign players to his Belgium Club and loan them to City eg Zohore under our last Embargo before we could sign him permanent which I'm sure he is well aware of.

Under what circumstances can a Club operating under an Embargo sign players?

During a Transfer Window

Clubs can ‘staff up’, so they have 23 players of Professional Standing within their squad.

Clubs are able to ‘staff up’ to ensure the integrity of the competitions remain and so that Clubs are able to fulfil their fixtures.

Clubs are only permitted to ‘staff up’ by signing players on loan or players not registered with another Club
Clubs cannot pay fees to acquire loan players and cannot pay additional wages on top of the salary the player receives at their parent Club
Clubs ‘staffing up’ may only register players until the end of the current Season, whilst loan transfers can only be for half a season
Budget restrictions apply dependent upon the divisional status of the Club under embargo

There is only one spot.

Any of our present squad players going out on loan does not release a spot?

Listening to Hudson it indicated we won't be doing anything. The club needs to put out a statement. What does our chairman get paid for? Silence is deafening.

Barcelona were under a fifa embargo recently and could sign players but they could only have registered 24 players at a time there is a minimum amount weather it be a fifa or country's association there is a minimum amount .

Apologies if this has been already posted but I've just read Glen Williams piece on the embargo, the key information is that the FIFA ban supercedes the EFL and no players can be brought in, even to make up to the 23 that the EFL allow.

"Under EFL rules, clubs are afforded the leniency to "staff up" to 23 players, which, it was initially thought, the Bluebirds would be able to do. However, WalesOnline understands that the transfer embargo has been imposed by FIFA, which supersedes the EFL ban, which renders the prospect of bringing players in impossible".
