Club legend Sean Morrison to leave Cardiff City after more than eight years as Bluebirds make statement
The 31-year-old played almost 300 games for the Bluebirds and enjoyed a promotion to the Premier League
Sean Morrison will leave Cardiff City after eight-and-a-half years
Sean Morrison will leave Cardiff City following the expiration of his return-to-play contract, the club have confirmed.
The former Bluebirds skipper signed for the club in 2014 and played 295, winning promotion to the Premier League back in 2018.
The centre-back, 31, sustained an ACL injury back in February 2022 and had undergo surgery to rectify the problem and his contract ran out in the summer, during his rehabilitation.
Morrison played three games for the under-21s over the last few months as he worked his way back to fitness, with Mark Hudson previously stating that conversations were to be had over the player's future.
However, it has been decided that Morrison, a bona fide fan favourite in this corner of the world, will move on to pastures new after eight-and-a-half years with the club and Hudson wanted to place on record his thanks.
"I want to put on record Sean will be leaving," Hudson said. "I’ve had long conversations with Sean, he has been here for eight and a half years. He captained the club for six of them, played 300 games, scored 33 goals, won promotion, won Player of the Season in 2017/18.
"He has been a huge influence on and off the pitch. He created some amazing environments in dressing rooms for players to come into. He has always been so welcoming to everyone around the club, fans, players, staff. He’s been a huge influence and I want to wish him all the very best going forward. He has got years to play.
"I think he can get back up to speed. It was a huge injury at a disappointing time in his career. I’ve told him he can get fitter and stronger and he will have many years playing the game.
"We had conversations and ultimately the decision has been made. We were open, honest and I wanted to involved him in all those conversations. That's why I'm here telling everyone he is highly regard and I wish him all the very best going forward."
