Curtis Nelson

Derby County boss Paul Warne has categorically ruled out a move for Cardiff City defender Curtis Nelson.

The Bluebirds centre-back has been out of favour this season, having fallen behind Perry Ng, Cedric Kipre and Jack Simpson in the pecking order.

It is understood that Nelson could be one of the players who leaves the Bluebirds this month. He has just six months left on his current deal and City, under a transfer embargo, are keen to free some room in their squad in order for them to add others for them to "staff up" to 23 players.

Asked about the links to Nelson and Shinnie, Warne told DerbyshireLive: "Well Curtis Nelson, I was going to say no comment, but he gets mentioned every window and I have definitely said that there's no truth in that.

"Graeme Shinnie went to our game the other week because my son sat beside him and he said 'dad I guarantee you get linked with him'. So I've been linked with him because he was at our game the other day. That's it. So there ladies and gentlemen lies the Internet. It's absolute full of toot. So no truth."

Nelson's future is one to keep an eye on this month, though. He has started just three Championship games and has been used as a substitute late on in matches a further five times.

It's not something the 29-year-old is used to, having been first choice at previous clubs Plymouth Argyle and Oxford United. Indeed, he has been a regular for Cardiff until this season, save a couple of injury issues.

But he is a relatively high earner and started the season poorly, with a few mistakes leading to goals early on in the campaign. It would not be a total surprise if he seeks a new challenge elsewhere in the coming weeks.

He must be training and playing pretty poorly if he is behind Simpson who was absolutely shocking against BR.

Not great but no worse than NG on the day. Pumped balls caused havoc down our right (NGs) side as much (possibly more) than our left (Sampson’s) side.

I think any ball near our defence will cause problems, we have just been lucky that some of those teams have not had their shooting boots on.....I worry for the Leeds game

I think NG looks more comfortable with the ball but turns it over as much or more than Nelson, but we've convinced ourselves he is Beckenbauer. NG as a centre half in a back 4 sums up the all risk with no visible reward of this season. At least Curtis is a defending center half and many goals early doors we down NG's channel.

That’s a fair assessment imo.
