Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan's net worth as fortune takes massive hit

He in fact lost his billionaire status in 2016, six years into his Cardiff tenure and in his own businesses Tan has lost half his wealth.

According to Forbes, the 70-year-old is now worth $905m (£744m).

The Malaysian leisure tycoon has been in charge of the Welsh capital city club for 12 years

Vincent Tan celebrated 12 years at the helm at Cardiff City back in May.

The Bluebirds are two points above the relegation zone and have been hit with a transfer ban after the Court of Arbitration for Sport in September ruled Cardiff would have to pay the first instalment of the transfer fee for Emiliano Sala to Nantes FC after almost three years of legal wrangling. For the full explanation, read this.

This latest CAS ruling comes after the Covid-19 pandemic, during which Tan's leisure empire was hit particularly hard. The same goes for the three football clubs he owns - Cardiff, FK Sarajevo and KV Kortrijk.

For context, when Tan took over the Bluebirds in 2010, he had entered the Forbes billionaire list that year with an estimated worth of $1.2 billion (£1bn). At his peak, in 2014, he was worth £1.6bn (£1.32m)

Now, in 2022, his worth has almost halved from his 2016 peak net worth. According to Forbes, the 70-year-old is now worth $905m (£744m).

He in fact lost his billionaire status in 2016, six years into his Cardiff tenure.

While clearly Tan is still a multi-multi-millionaire, it paints a pretty stark picture of his diminished wealth during his most recent years in charge of the club, a role which has seemingly become a labour of love.

Tan, however, insists he still has the vim and vigour to get City back up to the Premier League and stabilise their position in the top flight before he calls time on his reign.

VINCENT TAN:

"Cardiff is a big city, this is a big club, we should be in the Premier League. Get back up there and this time I can learn from the mistakes made previously, and look to stay there for 10 years.

"That's the drive for me. By then I'd be 81, but hopefully I will still be able to walk well. I'm a vegetarian, I exercise, I take care of myself, don't drink a drop of liquor, don't smoke a single cigarette. I'm in good condition and I genuinely feel I can be around to help turn around the situation.

"Do you think I would be putting in money every month, particularly during the pandemic, if I didn't want success?

"A big part of my wealth is invested here and I hope it is not completely lost. I believe it's possible to turn it around. I'm an optimistic person, I insist positive things can happen when others don't believe it's possible."

The joys of owning a football club, he keeps us afloat, loses a fortune and is slagged off by the fans lol

It would have been miles cheaper and more fun to have bought a big yacht!

No offence, but I think he's had long enough to come good on his promises

Most have given him and his management team more than a chance but the Sala situation has drained eventhe most sympathetic

I am not of the opinion VT has been our worst owner but there are now strong arguments developing for him being amongst the most disappointing and that should sadden everyone, including the man himself

Mark,

Tan has brought it all on to himself, created his own problems and his bad mismanagement of our club from top to bottom is the reason fans have virtually all turned.

I got a grudge for changing strip to red.. But other than that twice in the premiership is not to shabby... When we got relegated he tried to return but each time with bad managers and overpaid ordinary players.. Who knows he might do it again.. If we stay up this season that is.. These players need to gel and quick

Tan is not a charismatic chairman, and he has made some mistakes including the kit colour. We all make mistakes and he has admitted his.
But when you look at the facts, he has put a hell of a lot of money into the club and has been at the helm through some of the Bluebirds most successful times in the last 100 years.
Yet he is hated by some on here, who seem to love the chance to decry him.

In contrast several of our previous Chairmen were little better than crooks and took far more out of the club than they put in
Yet the same “some” on here would welcome them back with open arms.

As an aside Tan is also very well known for contributing millions to charities including some in Wales. So in my view, he is by no means perfect (who is?), but I am grateful for what he has done, and if he packs in, I hope that any new owner will be better.

Whatever you think of the man theres no denying he's lost a shed load of money. Granted the pandemic probably accounts for alot of it, but he has kept us afloat. Just!
For that I am grateful

I think the vast majority of fans (not just the minority on here) would like to see Tan sell up and move on as long as we could get a better owner which is a lot easier said than done.

Saying that that, you’ve made a well balanced post which sees both sides as does Kieth (Ninian1962) and not just hate and one sided views as do a few on here.

I believe it’s certainly time Tan moved on but I can’t see it happening anytime soon.
