For me he was the greatest ever before winning the World Cup followed by maradona But now with his performances at this World Cup there’s no doubt.

I’m sure mbappe will be pushing for this accolade when he’s Messi age.

Add in the fact he tore this World Cup to shreds at 35 and he’s got the longevity that the others haven’t

Exactly Europe is harder

It would always be his fellow countryman Maradona for me,he was a football genius,but have to say Messi is rather good.

He's won everything, the longevity at the highest level; he has to be the greatest for me.

That said, I never grew up watching the alternatives like Pele, Maradona, Best, etc.

But did any of them do it for 15 years consistently at the highest level?

Agree with you, Maradona used to get the shite kicked out of him every game when refereeing was slightly less than it is now. Messi is great, but he and others get so much protection now. In his era he is without doubt the best, but for me Maradona it is.

I think so I like Maradona's natural ability and strength but he was flawed!

Certainly the greatest of this generation but a lot has changed since Pele's first world cup goal knocked out the mighty Wales in 1958.

Messi has thankfully never had to deal with the outright thuggery that Pele did, and Pele never had the freedom that Messi has in a game.

They are both the best of their generation as was Maradona.

It’s a yes from me because of career achievement ( culminating in yesterday) and time at the very top . Shame they dressed him like Batman to receive the trophy .
