Trains to Ninian Park

Thu Dec 01, 2022 8:22 pm

After loads of dissatisfaction with the train capacities after home games at Ninian Park ie 1 carriage to Central and 1 to Radyr with loads of us being treated like idiots and being held back and made to queue in all weathers, I wrote to a number of AM`s at the Senedd at TFW itself. Needless to say I`m still waiting on tfw but have had the most success through Natasha Asgar who represents Newport and is the Shadow Transport Minister (and her case worker Paul Morris.)

Here`s what I eventually received which looks like a solution to the issue sometime in the New Year. As ever with the senedd I`ll believe it when I see it but some plan seems to have been made and the bloke responding is a season ticket holder himself so we must have half a chance in seeing some improvement!

I share Mr Cochrane’s desire to see increased capacity for Cardiff City home games, and our planners are working incredibly hard with the resources we currently have available to us to provide as much capacity as possible. As mentioned in my previous correspondence, we are taking delivery of brand-new trains, and already have the first of our brand-new class 197 trains in service in North Wales. We are at a key moment in our transition at the moment, where we are delivering major infrastructure changes, taking delivery of brand-new trains whilst still working to maintain our legacy fleet to a high standard. This means that in direct response to your constituent, it’s unlikely we’ll be able to strengthen the trains for the coming home fixtures in December, but we will have more opportunity in the new year, as more of our brand-new trains come into service, which may free up more carriages across the network. The gradual phasing in of our brand-new trains will take time however, as we are dependent on the delivery of the trains from the manufacturers.

I have already flagged the request with our planners who have committed to continue to explore this issue. Indeed, as a Cardiff City season ticket holder myself for many years who travelled to and from games by train, I do appreciate the issue.

Well done mate.
Reminded me of when I was a kid in the early 60s.
My father would take me to the City from Cwmbran.
We would catch the train to Newport. Then get on a train to Ninian Park halt.
