Best for me in my years watching football but as SW says it’s a generational thing.

For me John Charles as Jack Charlton said it was like having twelve men in your team when John was playing

Every time I saw Stanley Mathews play Alf Sherwood was too good a fullback, for him to show his talent, always kept him quiet

My father took me to see Matthews at the City when he went back to Stoke and also to Shrewsbury to see Trevor Ford when he played for for the County, both were way past their best.

In my opinion Gazza is so overrated. Yes great player but was only elite for a couple of seasons in his early career. Went down hill due to injuries and lifestyle. Difficult to compare players from different generations and different positions ,different lifestyles George Best was done in before 30. Giggs played at top level till 40 etc.. Its more of a who's the most popular contest. George Best coz he had skill, got smashed everyday and shagged a load of woman.

There are a lot of good players from a lot of different eras. For me the best all round player who excelled for pretty much most of his career was Jimmy Greaves. Very unlucky not to play in the 1966 World Cup Final.

Best always attempted to cross the divide when it came to the troubles, he was an East Belfast lad. When he died my mate , a photographer, went to the funeral. He went into a Republican bar in West Belfast it was a shrine to Georgie wall to wall Bestie and so it should have been. :thumbright: :thumbright: :thumbright:

Yes but the family weren’t particularly religious and were not involved in the politics either. Though they did receive death threats from the IRA at one point.
