It's debatable but the scousers had the edge on Man U, the latter dressed in Fred Perry and the former nicking luxury sportswear brands when in Europe, that's seems to be where it started from and grew although I seem to recollect some London clubs also claim to be first but timewise, I don't think there was much in it. I remember that it was an almost natural transition for a lot of rhe young revivalist mods and also rude boys etc, theres a good book called the Soul Stylists by Paulo Hewitt that links the casual scene right back to the original mod scene of the 60s, the clothes and soul music being the link. Long may it continue with the youngsters too, football, music and decent clobber is very important.

Scousers were the first, in Scotland it was Aberdeen. There's a book called "casuals" written by Phil Thornton. No violence just covers other aspects of football culture.

Yeah I read Aberdeen played the Mickey Mousers and took the fashion back up the road.

Yes they were.
Some guy took his big van to Europe, filled it up with all casual stuff, opened up his own shop and never look back.
I thought it would go nowhere but what did I know then. None of my mates were interested but soon changed their minds.

I can remember going to Liverpool late seventies, down the city it was still double denim and flares. What I saw up there blew my mind this was even before designer sports gear. They were wearing bleached jeans with cuts and Frey’s leather hunter jackets Israeli army parkas skiing jumpers they looked so cool. Wedge haircuts were all the rage up there as well. I would definitely say they were the first to start a trend that was soon followed by cockneys and Man City’s kook cats.
