World Cup headlines as Qatar try to ban beer in stadiums at last minute and Wales 'to make quarter-finals'

Qataris' late call for Stadium beer ban

Tournament hosts Qatar have put pressure on FIFA to ban the sale of alcohol at the eight stadiums being used in the World Cup, according to The Times.

Alcohol is widely unavailable in the nation, although exceptions were being made to ensure fans could drink booze in the tournament. It was expected that Budweiser - who are the tournament's official alcohol sponsor - would be available to purchase at each of the venues hosting matches.

However, the hosts have been locked in talks with the football governing body to prevent beer from being sold at the eight stadiums, unless consumed in the expensive hospitality boxes which cost upwards of £19,000 - meaning fan parks could be only place to sell Budweiser at the event.

Annis, sorry been a long time.
We have an apartment block thing booked a year or two ago plus a few friends with the licence to buy alcohol. Best we can get is 84 quid for 24 cans of Heineken, the prices for wine are insane, 40 quid a bottle that most European countries would tip it down the drain. I can see this getting nasty, not hooliganism per se, the lefty freaks who want this type of shit in Europe are in for a very rude awaking.

Fans new the law in this country regarding drinking alcohol. If people want to get pissed while watching the match then stay at home and watch it on TV. I fail to understand the need to have to drink during a game. There will always be some idiot getting drunk getting arrested and will proberbly be British as we like to make make a scene every where we go. Hope all goes well but I can't see it there is always one to stupid to keep themselves under control a couple of pints then look out.

You should be able to watch a game of football without a pint, but that’s not really the point.
Qatar promised much on the “fan experience” but already bottled that commitment on alcohol before a ball kicked. But you can get alcohol in the “corporate” sections? It’s a nonsense.

Your missing the point . It’s not the drinking during the game , that was never on the table . It was drinking in the outer areas of the stadium . It’s an issue given the lack of other places to have a drink . Given this fact fans have planned days and this is an unwelcome 11th hour curveball. Looks like we’ll be extending our stay in the Belgian cafe we have booked instead of ‘soaking up the atmosphere’

Spot on . Ditto moving the opening game with about 5 weeks notice . Ridiculous. I’m going to two games via Dubai but fifa deserve this to be an abject failure of a tournament

I hope they're going to pay back the money that Budweiser paid in sponsorship.

We all know it should never have been awarded to Qatar in the first place and if the goal was to help in the Middle East it should have gone to a much more liberal country.

I watched all 4 episodes of FIFA Uncovered on Netflix yesterday & damn the corruption & amounts of money are staggering.

I'll be watching it and will enjoy it purely for the football (hopefully) when it starts but it should never had ever been in Qatar, everyone knew it when corrupt FIFA awarded it. They just seem untouchable because of the huge sums and obvious bribery on many levels.

Odd thing is that there has been no real media build up to this WC when it's usually everywhere, it just doesn't have the feel and excitement this time, almost an empty occasion.

Think its because it's in middle of season and lots of footy stories around and not just wc plus for obvious reasons football is taking back seat when its normally at front.

Qatar should never have been allowed to host it but as it was no one should expect the country to change just for the rest of the World.

Buds sponsorship is not about shifting units in Qatar, it's about getting money out of the pockets of fans all over the World whether in bars watching or at home.

What you got to beare in mind is Qatar would have had to produce a plan and project as to how thry would run WC ? So on that basis you assume lbgt+ also workers and civil rights like woman was addressed ? But looking at it now you suspect nothing was put down to address the concerns so either fifa ignored their own procedures or they were bribed? Bud put out a Twitter response to drinks ban but as it was to question the ban it was quickly deleted that says it all

I think that's definitely a factor Al but I've never seen a WC with such general apathy and zero build up as this one. Everyone feels the same on socials, in the UK anyway and I suspect many other countries too. I'll no doubt enjoy the football when it starts but thus far it's a souless, false and empty damp squib of a tournament due to FIFAs corruption.

We tend to forget about a host countries issues when it starts but many won't forget how 6500 people died building the stadiums which will be always empty after the WC and Qatar's atrocious record on human rights, with FIFA saying everyone should respect them and just concentrate on the football. It beggars belief.

Hope fifa and UEFA learn from this but doubt it.... as for stadiums some will be dismantled and used for other things .... but something that doesn't get mentioned is way thousands of people (not workers) were moved out from their properties to have a new posher development built in a prime location around WC
