MARK HUDSON ON DWINDLING CROWDS

Fri Nov 04, 2022 7:40 pm

Mark Hudson said he dreams of a full, rocking Cardiff City Stadium but is mindful of the cost of living crisis we are currently facing amid a noticeable drop in attendance figures at home matches.

Cardiff started the campaign with more than 20,000 for the home win against Norwich City, however their most recent matches against Rotherham and Watford saw little more than 17,000 in attendance, according to the figures released by the club.

"I want to have a stadium full, that's absolutely something I want. A stadium rocking," Hudson said.

"They have been travelling all over the country to support us. Maybe after a pandemic is difficult to have the funds to do that. On Wednesday night it was absolutely torrential rain. I'm not expecting everyone to come out of the houses when you can barely see at one point.

"I understand it's difficult. The bigger picture is that we are on the back of a pandemic where funds can be tight, energy crisis, it can be tough, I understand. But I want the fans to be behind the team. Are they there and behind the team? Absolutely. I can't ask for any more.

"Financially it's very difficult to set aside funds to spend on a game every weekend and in midweek. Attendances have been good and they want to be behind the team, which they have been.

"If we talk about consistency of performances separately, we want to give them that. We are still a new group. I think consistency of performance has been good, but not results. If we take away the week we had the disallowed goal and two red cards, the consistency of performance has absolutely been there
."

Perhaps the club should look at reducing prices for home fans i mean really cheap for a one off saturday game to see if it makes any difference to attendances.
I could not do season ticket this season due to fuel costs but came down wednesday for watford game me and misses
2 tickets seniors cost £44 fuel £60 .

Hes right in most of what he says but last paragraph is particularly correct and the performances have been good. But so has the consistency of not scoring enough goals. That is costing us just as much as the 3 games he mentioned.

If we were home tomorrow in the premier League the stadium would be almost full cost of living crisis or not 17000 is a huge crowd for us in our present position.in the past when we were rooted to the bottom of the second division we would got crowds much less than 10000

Skiprat

Yes i suppose season tickets for the prem would have been 25,000 plus.

Just a note red button on sky has kept quite a few in the armchair on weekdays

The cost of living crisis definitely plays a part. Although the bigger issue is that most fans are disconnected and feel apathetic towards the club. Even if they had excess money, I think a lot still wouldn't show up.

I do think we have notoriously fickle fans though. We went from waving red scarves when we were winning to marching for Blue when we were losing.

In my opinion it's all about the football. Which at the moment is rubbish.
Any recession and cost of living crisis doesn't seem to bother Sunderland fans. They'll be 40000 there today.

Cheaper tickets needed, better music played. Bands under the Canton

The fans are starting to show how fed up of the club,or should I say the running of the club they are,the owner shows no interest the chairman is just a clown, and everyone is sick and tired of it

Exactly Mike,

I know unbelievable amounts of fans who have stopped and are season ticket holders who are so fed up, nothing to do with the cost of living.

If we were in the Premises there would be 29,000 plus there.

Cardiff has always had a fickle fan base.. crowds flock when we going well, back to their tv’s and Premiership plastic supporting when we are struggling.
just a stadium with fans wanting to support the team is good enough for me.. let the whiners stay at home.

If was at top end of championship now would only get 20k at best and top 2 later in season would be lucky to get 22k... that's the nature of city fans... as for this premier league example can say same about every club in efl.. they'll all get full houses...what is holding up is walkup crowd? It's around 3k dont usually get more than 5k at best of times during average season like now...:old:

To think we sold out the joint with Slade in charge v Derby need more incentives like that

17k is a figure given, but how many bodies in seats is it in reality when many ST stay aways are added.

I'll confess, I have a ST but have not bothered going down to the last few midweeks. Main reasons being - fuel price (35 a round trip...it adds up!) red button option and the main reason at the moment is that going down feels like a chore.

There's no general "buzz"at the stadium like there used to be, the same old boring, tired chants that are monotous, stupidly high prices in the ground for poor quality food and drink, results are frustrating and I just feel "broken" after Morison went- as in just more of the same old since Ole (bar Warnock) of in/out in/out no real direction / philosophy and general feeling that we are treading water "until...??".

I can't see me renewing next year tbh, even after having an ST for over 15 years and even if we were "top 2". I hated the Prem and all the falsehood and BS that came with it. I just want a team with a clear direction on and off the pitch, some buzz and new ideas at games (in the stands). At the moment,I just cant see it changing.

I know loads will slate me on here for saying the above, but i know 100% many other fans i've spoken to feel the same. For many, time and money are a precious comodity and at the moment ccfc in its current state is not worth either

You will never ever build a fanbase when your club has played the vast majority of its football outside the top division.it will always be fickle as some say today we visit a club who have given their fans 86 seasons of top flight football to enjoy.

If the product on offer is dull and boring - people wont buy it no matter the price.

Lets hope though that we start to turn the corner - even though we cant score for toffee - the build up play was good, Philligene was great to watch to.

Watching a stream today - we look good - and much better than Sunderland. So lets hope for a miracle goal scorer comes in or we find one from the youth setup.

If Hudson wants a rockin stadium as well - he needs to interact wit the crowd. It maybe childish but when the manager gets involvedwith the crowd - like Warnock and Malky - it does bond the crowd and the manager - in my opinion anyway

I I wont slate you. I agree with a lot of what you say, particularly regarding the lack of buzz and prices for food and drink. And totally agree that it sometimes feels like a chore, particularly when its a mid week game. Hull on Tuesday night and after todays win i should be looking forward to it but I am not. Has that feel about when Slade was here.
