To the nationalists…

Wed Nov 02, 2022 6:43 pm

The ‘Cymru’ football team is full of players born and bred in England - players who have never lived in England and who even stress their kids are English.

Did you know Kieffer Moore corrected a reporter who made a passing comment during interview about his child playing for Wales.

Should we stop exploiting the UEFA nationality rules which and served us do well and call up pure bred Welsh nationals?

What are we saying? Just interested how Welsh you want us to be if it currently isn’t enough.

I think we should keep everything exactly as it is, including the name WALES.

Agree.

I really don't think most people are fussed on this proposed change, it seems like it's an idea from one person at the FAW. And all this Red Wall stuff makes me laugh, where were they all when we were shit with 10k of us watching us lose to Monte Negro?

If you are talking about the name change, I dont see why the change and full nationalism aren't mutually exclusive.

We obviously have a different enough culture to be unique so why not use our language to say our name?

The UEFA rules are there for all not just Wales, don't see why it should affect nationalism.

I'm not that precious about having the name change but when you know that the word Wales is not a translation of Cymru but actually means "foreigner" in Anglo Saxon you should question its validity.

Pretty checky of the new English when you consider especially the Welsh were on their land well before the Angles or Saxons arrived.

Couldn't agree more. In fact why are we singing Welsh songs in the stadium? The fans all speak English FFS! Ban yma o hyd please.

Anyone who disagrees needs to question whether they even want Kieffer in the team as the two are so obviously linked.

Why don't you actually say what you're trying to say? So you can play both sides of the coin depending which way everyone thinks no doubt. And what does never having lived in England mean?

If you're talking about the current storm in a teacup about the proposed name change, just leave it as is or change it, doesn't make much difference to me.

I don't understand the rational behind this.

Nobody has suggested anything you have mentioned. You just made it all up.

Wales is embracing its language and history. That's a great thing. I'm not sure why Welsh people are threatened by that.

We've been singing a Welsh anthem without harm or complaint. In fact, most people love the anthem, at home and abroad.

We have a great identity. I'm really pleased we're embracing it.

What I find bizarre is the amount of Welsh people who are actually offended by the actual name of our country, Cymru. Get a grip man. You're mistaking this as an anti-English gesture.

Yep.. can’t have it both ways. Cymru ffs, no ambulances but zombie communist Drakeford spends £45M a year on bilingualism.

And English born players aren’t Welsh.

Indeed. It's a weird one, although everything has been politicized in this day and age.

Those sitting on the left think everyone to the right is a Nazi, while everyone on the right thinks anyone to their left is a Communist, and any small gesture must be linked to one or the other.

I see it as nothing more than a grand gesture, putting Welsh history, language, and culture to the forefront, which will no doubt result in an increased interest in the country, considering how many people outside of the UK think Wales is in England.

Changing to Cymru would move Wales away from the bottom of Uefa’s alphabetical list of nations at draws and meetings. “We sit by the Ukrainians all the time and that’s nice because we’ve become good friends with them,” Mooney joked. “But we would like to sit by the Croatians and the Czechs a bit more

I just don't understand the rational behind it unless it is a nationalistic thing, and being driven by certain members of the FAW who have such tendencies.

Wales is a predominantly English speaking country and most of us call our country, Wales. My children are both fluent Welsh speakers as is my wife, so its not that I am anti language. But why am and the majority now expected to call the country we were born in and have lived in for most of our lives life, Cymru? .

If the FAW - they will have to change that name if they get their way- want to change the name put it to the vote of the fans.

The name Cymru just sounds stupid as well. A stupid name to mark the start of what will probably be a cycle of decline now that the golden generation is fading.

It's the same with the "Prince of Wales" title of the Royal Family, which was introduced as a position of humiliation after Owain Glyndwr declared himself Prince of Wales.

In Welsh, Cymru essentially translates to "Welshman." Which comes from a Brittonic word that translates to "fellow countryman."

We are the original people of Britain and have a language and history far older than England, who are French and German, despite everything they did to try and ban and stop it, which is what the song Yma O Hyd is about. We should be proud of it. I don't understand the pushback.

Most of the people in Wales are not the original people of Britain, particularly those of us in South Wales and the North East which are the two largest population centres. We are a mixture of English, Irish, Scottish and other immigrants into Wales as well as the original British. I was born in Wales as was my mother, father and all 4 grandparents. But my great grandparents are a mixture of Welsh (4), English(2), Irish and Italian and i suspect most people on this forum would have a similar heritage.
