Toshack

Tue Nov 01, 2022 9:44 am

Enjoyable programme last night on BBC 1 , the life of Tosh. The only part which was sad, when Cardiff were trying to sell him off first to Fulham then to Liverpool. The difference between Cardiff and Liverpool in those days was not as great as it is today. If had kept him - maybe we would be a top 6 club now. We always seem to have short sighted Directors.

Thought he would have made a good directer of football for Tan after he sacked Malky, was a position that needed filling then as it is needed now

If you can stomach watching a program about the jacks, there’s a documentary on prime about him

I was gutted at the time of the sale. I was a kid and he was my hero. But £110,000 was a huge fee in those days and not that far off the British record which was £165,000 if my memory serves me right. In retrospect it was probably too good to turn down.

What cost us that year was not replacing him immediately. The directors tried to make do with "Danny" Showers who was still very young and not quite good enough. We had a few bad results against much poorer teams just after Tosh went. Warboys was signed 2 months later and proved a great replacement that half season - of those of us who were there, who can forget his hat trick in the first 9 minutes against Carlisle?

What is often overlooked is that if Tosh had stayed, there its quite possible we might have beaten Real Madrid in the QF over two legs ( Warboys was ineligible) and who knows, reached the final.

I agree. I followed Wales home and away during that period and endured some woeful results.

However visited some wonderful countries and have great memories. Toshack deserves a lot of credit and certainly can take a lot of praise for our successes.

These were Toshacks own words taken from a interview he had.

Liverpool were going to struggle to get any money for me if I couldn’t pass a medical. So I asked if they’d let me go for free. That way I could go down to the lower divisions and see if I could get a role as a player-coach somewhere.

Cardiff was my first thought, but they didn’t fancy the idea. I think the Cardiff manager Jimmy Andrews was a bit too concerned for his own future.

You notice he only said. " I think" not that Andrews was actually against him coming as a coach

Not long after his debut as a sub at 16 he started up front with George Johnstone a young Scottish lad who I think was only 18. Can you imagine that now? Johnstone was banging them in as well and went to Arsenal not long after but is living locally now.

I remember the general feeling at the time was that Andrews felt it was only a matter of time before Toshack took over and was against it. How true that was we will never know.

Thinking back I'm sure Tosh last game for Cardiff he scored a Hat Trick then he was gone. Never missed a game those days. My memory might be failing but I'm sure Tosh and Brian Clarke played up front great attack them. Just a shame for ever the reason he never joined Cardiff missed out big time.

No, he did not score in his last game the hat-trick came in the last but one game where we won 5-1 his third goal was his last for the city. that was against Hull City
The last game he played in was against QPR away city won 1-0

Spot on. I seem to remember that it was the perfect hat trick. Header, left foot and right foot and Hull were top. We might even have replaced them. And Leighton Philips got the goal at QPR. (I don't understand how i can remember all this when i cant remember who got the second goal on Tuesday! )
