After Saturday’s home defeat to rock bottom Coventry, City travel away to QPR on Wednesday night:

Tuesday 18th October 2022

Has anything changed in terms of your management ?

Mark Hudson:

"I’ve spoken to the owner and the board. It’s a focus we’re trying to do the best we can do. That is all I care about. Doing the best I can for the football club and the team. The focus for the players is to get results. "

MARK HUDSON:

Thoughts on QPR...

"The Championship brings games thick and fast. We had to speak about the game on the weekend and then focus quickly on QPR, and what we could do better from the game. We spoke about them yesterday and we’ll travel down today.

"They’ve done well under Michael. It’ll be a tough game and we’ve got to keep our levels as high as possible."

Learned anything about yourself as a coach?

"You’re always learning and that’s something I enjoy doing every day. You have to give yourself an opportunity to do that. I was well aware of what it entails.

"I’ve been around football a long time in different roles and just focusing on what we can achieve as a team with this football club. I’m enjoying it. I don’t enjoy it when we lose but that’s football."

Hudson fully focused on QPR as derby day looms

Mark Hudson insists Cardiff City are fully focused on Wednesday night's clash with Queens Park Rangers, despite the South Wales derby being just around the corner.

Saturday's disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to Coventry City was Cardiff's first under the interim boss, and dented City's momentum ahead of Sunday's showdown with their bitter rivals.

It also leaves Cardiff down in 18th position, five points above the relegation zone but only four adrift of the play-off places.

A win over the Swans would go a long way to kickstarting their season, and would also help heal some of the wounds inflicted by Swansea's league double, the first in the history of this fixture.

However, Hudson insists all of that will be placed on the backburner, with a trip to Loftus Road the most pressing priority.

“We will focus on QPR first and then think about Swansea,” said Hudson who had previously taken seven points from a possible nine before the defeat to the Sky Blues.

“We now have to look to go and win those games and that’s what we will do.”

Learned anything other than the offside rule being confusing?

"It’s very confusing. If you’re onside, you’re onside, aren’t you. We’ll leave that there. First half we weren’t at our levels that we’d been at in the three games in a week, which we should have been.

"I’d felt confident after the week we’d aha going into the game. Preparations were good. Just maybe we dropped our levels with the ball and against the ball. Second half we started well and got the goal that wasn’t a goal and that maybe took a little bit out of us. We couldn’t find a way through after that."

MARK HUDSON:

Frustration? Can you use it as a positive?

"Yeah. I think we talk about Robbo’s movement for that goal just shows you the level he gives you. He works so hard to keep himself onside and scores a goal. We could have got something out of the game when we weren’t at our best.

"That’s what you’ve got to do when you’re not quite at your level from a game. You’ve got to try and get something from it. I felt we could have done that but it wasn’t to be. We’ve learned from it. We’ve spoken about it. Now on to QPR."

Why not at all levels?

"You have to look at the opposition as well. They came, they’re a good side. The table is a false one for them. They’re three or four games behind teams.

"They’d been in good form leading into the game. They’ve got good variation to their game and they’ve got one of the best goalscorers in the league."

Is it simple to just focus on each game?

"I’d still do that regardless of what the role entails. It’s something we look at in terms of this game and the next game and what’s come after that.

"We have to focus on the game in front of us, which is QPR, and I’ve no doubt we will do. But you know what’s coming after that. We’re planning for that as well."

Bagan latest:

"Joel completed 60 minutes in the under-21s fixture with Swansea. He has had a hip issue, so we’ve progressed him. He’s still progressing. Still not quite there yet.

"He is still at the point where if he has a tough day, he maybe needs a lighter day the following day. We’re just managing him to be able to complete the full level of training.

"I spoke to him yesterday and worked on a few things that he can improve on, which we do with every player."

Does Sunday figure in your team selection? Kipre one booking away from a ban?

"I think they’ve got three bookings away from possible selection problems as well!

"Again. I know what’s to come. I know how important that game is, but we have QPR to focus on."

Done anything to rectify the attacking issues?

"We had a meeting. We debriefed the game and where it had been in the previous week, where we had been maybe taking a little more care with the final pass, the final through ball, tried to find those cutting-edge moments.

"We were maybe a little too rushed on Saturday with that. But we’ve spoken about it as a group. But we’ve had to put it to bed and focus quickly on QPR."

Colwill a World Cup concern?

"Nothing to be concerned about with regards to the World Cup. We just need to make sure he’s on the grass and completing a session.

"He didn’t complete one of the tick boxes, so maybe just a couple of more days back. But nothing long-term to worry about."

Is talk of the Swansea derby banned?

"Definitely not banned. We all know the importance of the game. I know you’re all going to be there on Friday for the press conference, so we do have to focus on QPR.

"But I do know, and the players do know, what is coming up in the derby game."

Do you feel like you're in an audition?

"If you had the job or didn’t you’d always be auditioning in a way. If you had the role permanently, you still have to do your job to the best of your ability.

"That’s all I’d ever do. I don’t feel that pressure. I focus on what I can do for the team and what we can do together as a unit. That’s where we’re at, at the moment."

Injury update

"Rubin [Colwill] had a minor setback, which is a shame as we really wanted him to be involved. That’s exactly where he’s been unfortunately. We know and Wales know. We're trying to get him on the grass and training with us as much as we can.

"He had a little setback the other day, which is nothing too major. It just set him back a few more days than we thought. So he won’t be available tomorrow.

"Ebs [Ebou Adams] is progressing well. He’s closer to getting back on the grass. We had Isaak Davies out doing some straight line running which is good.

"Mahlon [Romeo] was out on the grass doing fitness tests yesterday, so we’ll need to see how that goes."

Re: BREAKING MARK HUDSON: “ TUESDAY 18TH OCTOBER 2022 “

Cardiff City boss Mark Hudson says Rubin Colwill will miss tomorrow's clash with Queens Park Rangers, but insists Wales have no reason to be concerned ahead of the World Cup.

Colwill has endured a frustrating campaign, having seen his season stunted by injury. He's currently working his way back from a hip flexor problem, and Hudson had initially hoped to call upon the forward for the trip to Loftus Road tomorrow.

The 20-year-old has made just one league start for the Bluebirds this season, having spent much of the summer on the treatment table, and his return to action now looks set to be pushed back once again.

"Rubin [Colwill] had a minor setback, which is a shame as we really wanted him to be involved," Hudson said. "That’s exactly where he’s been unfortunately. We know and Wales know. We're trying to get him on the grass and training with us as much as we can. He had a little setback the other day, which is nothing too major. It’s just set him back a few more days than we thought. So he won’t be available tomorrow.

The news may well add to the growing unease over Colwill's fitness for the World Cup, but Hudson has played down any concerns about his readiness for the tournament in Qatar next month.

"It's nothing to be concerned about with regards to the World Cup," he added. We just need to make sure he’s on the grass and completing a session. He didn’t complete one of the tick boxes, so maybe just a couple of more days back. But nothing long-term to worry about."

Meanwhile, Ebou Adams and Isaak Davies are making positive progress, although both are still some way from a return.

Mahlon Romeo's fitness is also being assessed following a return from an ankle injury.

"Ebs [Ebou Adams] is progressing well," Hudson added. "He’s closer to getting back on the grass.

Mark Hudson says his side were 'too rushed' in the final third during their defeat to Coventry City on Saturday.

Cardiff slumped to their first defeat under Hudson, with Viktor Gyokeres netting the only goal of the afternoon at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The Bluebirds created a number of promising opportunities, but ultimately couldn't find the incisiveness needed up front to trouble the Sky Blues, who had previously won just once this season.

Hudson says his side have now put the disappointment of that defeat behind them, but admits there were lessons to be learned.

Mark Hudson:

"We had a meeting," he said when asked about the fallout from the weekend. "We debriefed the game and where it had been in the previous week, where we had been maybe taking a little more care with the final pass, the final through ball, tried to find those cutting-edge moments.

"We were maybe a little too rushed on Saturday with that. But we’ve spoken about it as a group. But we’ve had to put it to bed and focus quickly on QPR."
