Thursday 13th October 2022

So far under Mark Hudson’s management City have played 3 W 2 D1 L0

This Saturday Cardiff face rock bottom Coventry City at home.

MARK HUDSON:

Cardiff expecting tough Coventry encounter

You've got seven points from nine, have you done much different to before?

"Seven points from nine, for me, is a really good week. But it’s only one week in the season. You can’t rest on it.

"We know this weekend’s going to be a really, really tough game. You look at Coventry. They may be where they are in the league, but they’re three or four games behind everyone. You can’t take account of where a team are in the league. We know it’s going to be a tough game.

"We know they’re a good side. You’ve got to respect everyone in this league. It’s a tough team, Mark Robins has done brilliantly with them."

MARK HUDSON:

Coach latest

Has there been any progress on bringing in a coach?

"Lots of conversations, which is good. It’s important to make the right decision on that. It can’t be rushed. It might take a while, it might not. But it has to be right for the place, staff, players and club. It’s not something to take lightly. Those decisions, for me, I’d never take lightly. It’s an important one."

Does a manager need a coach who will say no to him sometimes?

"I ask people’s opinions all the time. I think it’s important. That’s why you’ve got a team around you. It’s not something that’s ultimately just you. I’ve always maintained that everyone’s input is important. I’ve mentioned before the team behind a team. There’s lots of personnel in this building, whose opinions I value.

"It’s something we work together on as a team. We make decisions together. Long may that continue."

Hudson asked about Watters

Is Max Watters still in your thinking?

"I think everyone’s in our plans. You look at what the team are achieving. They have to showcase themselves every single day. That’s what the standards are and you’ve got to want to be on the pitch. That’s all you can ask. It’s not just one player, it’s every player. That’s the importance of the squad."

Hudson quizzed on manager role

It would seem the club are not looking elsewhere for manager, are you content with that?

"I’m focused on what the team can achieve. It’s all I’ll ever do, focus on what we can deliver for them to feel comfortable in going into a game.

"For me, I never look too far ahead, and I’ll continue to say that. I live for the now and it’s important we focus on Coventry, QPR and Swansea coming up. I’m not focused on anything other than delivering what we can for the team."

Have there been any more discussions?

"We’ve had conversations about how we can get points from games. There’s no distractions. We’re focused on our jobs, and that’s the ultimate. The most important thing is that we’re focused on the games and getting the fans behind us, showing them what we’re all about. That’s the main aim for us at the moment."

Bluebirds want to excite fans

Fans are excited at the moment. Do you want to get them off their seats on Saturday?

"Absolutely. That’s what we’re trying to do. It was 1,200 fans at Wigan, which is unbelievable with all the train strikes and everything. We know they’ll be supporting us through thick and thin and they’ll be there again on Saturday.

"It’s down to us to show them something. I know they’ll be supporting us from minute one."

MARK HUDSON:

Balancing act

It's been a bit of a free week - what have you tried to put into place?

"It’s never a free week! The three-game week is obviously so busy in the Championship. We’ve got another one of them coming up. We came in, debriefed the game, debriefed the week, and we’ve focused ourselves on Coventry at the weekend.

"We had a good session on Tuesday and we had another good session planned today and tomorrow. After the back of a three-game week you need to recover the squad, but you also have to work the ones that haven’t unfortunately been on the grass. We’re trying to balance the two, whether they’ve started or not. We’ve had a good opportunity to do that this week."

MARK HUDSON:

Colwill and Davies latest

What about Rubin Colwilll and Isaak Davies?

"Isaak has touched the grass for the first time but there’s a return-to-play protocol. He’s quite a way away from pushing towards the squad yet. He’s got lots of boxes to tick just yet.

"Rubin completed half a session at the beginning of the week but he’s not fully trained yet. We’re looking to have him back sooner rather than later, but he’s getting close, which is good.

"He’s had a lot of work to do in and around strengthening his physique, which is something we planned for him."

Will he be involved on Saturday?

"Not sure yet. He’s got some protocols to complete. He’s not completed a full training session yet. We’re looking forward to having him around and available for selection as soon as possible."

Do you have any other injuries?

"No."

MARK HUDSON:

Romeo injury latest

How is Mahlon Romeo?

"He sustained a pretty heavy injury to his ankle/foot. He’s another player diligent with his work. He’s worked really hard with the physios. He’s looking to push, but he’s a doubt as well.

"He hasn’t been on the grass yet. We’ll have to wait and see with him."

MARK HUDSON:

Mark Hudson is on media duties, and Callum Robinson's injury is first on the agenda.

"He took a pretty heavy whack in the game at Wigan. Testament to him he continued as long as he could. He’s not been on the grass for the first part of the week, but he’s looking to shake off some bits today. So fingers crossed he comes through.

"He’s a bit of a doubt. Like I said, he took a heavy whack and he continued for as long as he could, which shows his mentality. We’ve been working hard with the physios to try and get that to settle."

He probably doesn’t want to miss out given his form?

"Of course. He’s been brilliant since he came in. He's great to have around the group. He’s a leader and he’s got good experience of this level, and his form’s been really good. He’s one you want to keep on the grass, keep him involved in the team, and we know how important he is to us. We just have to wait and see towards the weekend with him."

Hudson on mini South Wales derby

Did you catch any of the ‘mini’ South Wales derby?

"I watched it all. I thought it was full-blooded. Lots of eventful parts to the game. For Pursey and the boys to get a win, that’s good for them. Just watching individual performances within that is something that we do.

"We’re really invested in the youth coming through. We had a couple of our boys playing in that as well.

"We’re looking at how they’re performing. We watch the training. We speak with Pursey regularly. We have detailed conversations on the players. We’re heavily invested in what’s going on in our academy so we know that’s important. We know there’s a pathway for young players at our football club and that’s something we’re keen on."
