Why do Wales need to score twice?

Sun Sep 25, 2022 2:13 pm

Can someone explain to me why we need to score twice tonight? We lost 2-1 in Poland didn't we? We already have a better goal difference than Poland and have scored more goals. A one nil win would mean we have the same points and that we have drawn with them 2-2 over the two games. Even the away goals rule would favour us.

Have UEFA made up a new rule to work against us- The home goals rule!!

Baffled

Cos it’s done on head to head first not goal difference as a group.

Odd ruling that all possible head to head options are explored before group goal difference is taken into account.

If Poland 2-1 Wales and Wales 1-0 Poland, though we both have 0 goal difference and had scored 2 overall, on head to head Poland scored 2 in one game against us so win that head to head aspect.

Confusing and stupid but then again it’s quite the confusing and stupid competition

Completely daft and totally arbritary. Might as well toss a coin.

To be fair I think the same system is used in a few European leagues. I assume it’s risk minimisation for match fixing so that a third team can’t throw a result

I'm pretty sure its not head to head and any win will do. Points then goal difference I thought.

I'm still not sure that is right.

UEFA'S own website says that all we have to do is win ......

Netherlands will qualify for the Finals if they avoid defeat by three goals or more.

Belgium will qualify for the Finals if they win by three goals or more.

Poland will be relegated if they lose.

Wales will be relegated if they do not win.

I think I might be wrong there

We only had to score twice after we went behind.

If we'd won 1-0 we would have stayed up on goal difference.

The only places I'd seen mention of us needing to score twice was here and on another similarly named forum.

Point is academic, we lost.
