Cardiff City fringe player Gavin Whyte is "always asking"

Cardiff City fringe player Gavin Whyte is "always asking" about his old club Oxford United, according to ex-Bluebirds defender Ciaron Brown.

Whyte spent last year on loan at Oxford, following a spell at Hull City the season before, and it was thought he may end up leaving Cardiff for good this season.

However, he stayed in the Welsh capital, but has seen precious little game-time. The same cannot be said for former Cardiff centre-back Ciaron Brown, who did move to the U's and has become and important player for them.

While on international duty with Northern Ireland, Brown said Whyte, who Cardiff signed from Oxford in 2019, is very much taking an interest in the League One side as he struggles for minutes with the Bluebirds.

“He’s a good guy and a good player, so it’s nice to see a familiar face,” the defender said. “He’s always asking me how it’s going, how the team is and how certain players are.

“He always keeps in contact because he loves this club. When I see him, the first thing we talk about is Oxford. He’s always interested and looks at what’s going on.”

Whyte has just 31 minutes of Championship action to his name this season.

As much as some would like to see him get another chance here I feel Oxford is his level.

I would have played him up front while Waters was failing I wonder how he would have done as he scored in friendlies and under 23s but he never got a chance.
