Lib Dems we’re leading the council in Cardiff for some time. Rodney Berman was leader.
Bus station is being moved and rebuilt, not removed.
New, better, swimming pool is down the Bay as is the ice rink.
I won’t enter the political argument but let’s at least get the facts right.

I agree the pool is better but the old pool was knocked despite widespread protest to provide a very large square to approach the stadium which the council told us was crucial to the redevelopment. As soon as it was knocked down it was decided that this was no longer crucial and the cinema etc was built there.

Correct and empire pool was just that used for empire games they replaced it with nothing more than a leasure pool... and welsh swimmers divers ect have to travel to Swansea who replaced our pool as Wales's international pool.

It’s not just a leisure pool, one side is but the other, side is perfectly acceptable for training and some comps and has a good viewing area that holds quite a few.
The proposals and work being done to reopen the canal and enable a walk to the Bay look great.

Not acceptable to standards required for competition swimming which was promised by council... my point about the situation is that they promised to replace the mentioned arenas with same but they reneged on those promises and left city with inferior facilities.. and can you explain why remove the bus station and build two carbunkles on site and then turn a transport hub that meant
could travel anywhere
around city from one spot into a glorified bus stop like it is today where have to walk from one side town to other to catch your bus... may not live in Cardiff but do visit regularly for shopping and visiting so do see whats happening to our once great city.. the canal idea was muted many years ago and yes is great idea but why oh why didn't they plan a tramline from town to bay using space that rail line takes? Would have been fantastic for everyone especially less mobile visitors to bay... I just feel the city I grew up in is being destroyed by both establishments..

What you say is absolutely spot on.
When Castle Street was closed did the WAG take detailed readings and findings on the increased levels of pollution on Cathedral Road and the other alternative routes that traffic had to take in order to travel miles around the outskirts of the city whilst Castle Street was closed?
Did the WAG carry out detailed reports and investigations into the effect of the closure of Castle Street on businesses in the city centre?
If they did perhaps somebody could provide a link. Or would that not fit with their agenda to force people out of their cars onto inadequate public transport or onto their bikes.
Has anybody yet come up with a reason why cyclists who use the road systems on which the local authorities are spending millions of pounds to prioritise cyclists over motorists should not pay road tax for using those roads?

Castle st was reopened because the udiots at WG didn't figure out that cathedral rd would be grid locked with all the cars that would have used castle st so was forced to re open it... having said that the limit of traffic introduced on its re opening as meant pollution is at the acceptable levels but for some reason tw*t face FM thinks council should find alternatives to keeping it open "why"? Better ask him ...... as for bikes paying for use of rd oh cannot stick identification on bike (their excuse) so basically cyclists been told they can do what they like on rds.... but luckily can be prosecuted for running people over if get caught that is..wg transport policy is a shambles bit like other aspects of their policies.....

Divide and conquer, don't blame the cyclists blame the WAGkers, they will close the cycle lanes and widen pavements when they can get away with it, it won't be the pedestrians fault either.

And I second the don’t blame cyclists. It’s not their decision to cannibalise roads. But we SHOULD be making cycling safer for people. Personally I’d be designing routes either in parallel to roads but keeping capacity or ideally taking routes right away from main roads where possible. I try and cycle to work for fitness reasons. Some people are downright evil to people on bikes.

Some merit in what you say but cyclist do not help their cause.. last night 3 cyclists turned right into rd leading to john lewis car park nothing unusual in that except lights were on red!! Saw similar on allansbank/crews rd junction ealier... think part problem as well is these cycle lanes are in stupid areas and residents are also hit by having lanes in their roads... WG have an obsession for being idiots when comes to laws in Wales and they make them despite the people saying they dont want them... hence the dictatorship part of this thread.

3 cyclists did. But how many didn’t?
Driving I’m cut up by juts as many cars and other such stupidity. The issue with cyclists is there aren’t that many so we remember more of what the arse holes do.
Absolutely right the lanes are stupid. As is slashing road lanes for bike and bus lanes. As is the sodding 20mph limit!!!. We shouldn’t be pitting road users against each other. We should be encouraging and facilitating all sensible forms of transport. As I said. I’d be taking the cycle lanes away from tbr main roads as frankly there are much nicer areas to ride around and cause less issues!

pipster wrote:I know a bit about this - let me explain.
The main person driving this is Councilor Caro Wild - he is a Labour Councilor in Riverside / Pontcanna. Before he became a councilor he setup a rather radical cycling activist group. And he published a manifesto of all their demands (you can guess where this is going).
Mum used to take him to Greenan Common marches - climbing trees etc.
Anyway - when he got elected - he was put in charge of a council cabinet committee. The council published a proposal - and guess what - it was his old cycling activist manifesto. When Covid hit - he seized his chance. Under the guise of covid they started to implement all those road closures, blue lanes etc. He then stated that the air pollution levels on Caste st (where no one lives) would mean massive fines for the council. So he closed Castle st - citing air pollution.
What actually happened was that journey sfrom east to west Cardiff became longer. All traffic was shunted on top Lower Cathedral and Cathedral road. It was constant grid lock (which is what he wanted - according to labour activist Mike Welsh). There was then lorries, buses, national express coaches, vans, cars etc all stat in a jam on Cathedral road - and
they all kept their engines idyling whilst. so the air pollution got worse.
The council then very quietly release a questionairre. On that questionairre was the question keep Castle st closed or re open it. The council LOST the vote. So Wild / Council were forced to re open Castle St (total cost so far was 3 million).
Then all of a sudden a professor fro Cardiff Uni (Caro Wilds old cycling friend) decides to do some independent research and goes on to the nextdoor.co.uk site to ask people to fill in another questionairre. If you saw the questionairre - it was so blatantly a series of questions pre designed to come out in favour of closing down Castle St.
The questionairre was sent the professors boss - and the data was never heard of again. Meanwhile this prof and otyhers have been some other 'indpendent' work that it now seems has gone to the WAG - who now doing Caro Wild's old job for him.
Caro Wild is now climate change councilor for Cardiff (yes I didnt know we had one either)
And the result is that they are still trying to shut Castle St. They want to cause as much chaos as possible and then introduce a congestion charge. The overall plan is to make Cardiff a city of villages - so people dont travel.
The trouble is the people of Cardiff just voted Labour back in - so if you voted for Labour - you only have yourself to blame - enjoy you extended journey times, traffic jams and extra air pollution.
It made many people laugh when his partner went on the nextdoor site and pretended to not know him - but instead sang his praises about how great he is etc - whilst not disclosing she lives with him. The Labour group that run Cardiff Council are the most incompetent and dishonest bunch you could ever want to meet in my opinion (and quite a few others) - just my 2p worth on what was once a lovely city - now ruined by a bunch of infighting part time fools.
