LACK OF LEADERSHIP :
Where is the leadership?
No team is perfect , and it is unreasonable to put ‘all’ the blame on Steve Morison - for our lack of performance on the pitch to the level we expect and desire .
S.M was operating under a rather restricted budget that was only changed towards the end of the ‘transfer window’ when Tan correctly and understandably , felt the pressure and the need for strikers ( I hope that we were not rushed into getting who was available ) and changed tack the last minute.
With 17 new recruits - this is “HIS TEAM” and he has not stopped crowing about the excellence of -almost- every player he signed . He will therefore stand or fall by his actions , choices and results.
However , recruitment - in any team - is not reliant solely on the manager ….. but far more significantly on the policy , control and financial clout that the owner provides.
Morison , has done ‘his’ best and has worked tirelessly and efficiently to the best of his ability - within the limitations he was given by Tan.
The judgement on him and Tan will come during the course of this campaign.
Very significantly , there is one thing that I find fundamentally lacking in our present team is ….
“ LEADERSHIP !! “
Morison talks as if he is the be all and end all ….which is far far from the truth. Almost in every signing he says that this or that player wants to play “for me” …… hmmm….. not the Club ?
Ralls is no Captain nor is he guaranteed a place in the team to start with. Top teams - successful teams have three or more leaders .We lack and miss this leadership and the “SPUNK” - which can drive a team upwards and particularly when we are up against it.
Morison’s lad are all “nice” - but who is the Trojan with heavy balls ? Two or three are ok but not too …… street fighting leaders. Where is the “never say die” - “in the trenches” man ?
Morison’s managerial ability is at stake . His footballing ability in recruiting , picking the right team , making the substitutions and reading the game …… are still under scrutiny . However , the verdict on our hitherto missing leadership is already decided ….it is not there … or at least anywhere near the desired level.
Sean Morrison is a leader and I hope he resumes his leadership role sooner rather than later - however - does his style of play suit our pass , pass , pass newly method of performance ? Sometimes I wonder whether we are far overdoing our passing ….. sometimes for passing’s sake.
We lack penetration and can be too goody goody .
We are somewhat impotent at set pieces and not up to the level we wish on defending set pieces.
